How to Dress for an Interview

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Quinnipiac chapter.

I’m the first to admit it: when I want something I just can’t stop until I get it. So when I told people I wanted to become the next Lauren Conrad [circa her 2006 days] I really was not kidding. Fresh off a returning flight from California, I somehow landed a dream interview; but before I could be hand crafted into one of Kelly Cutrone’s many “B.I.B’s” [B*tches in Black], I inevitably went into panic mode.

Quickly moving past my closet lined with Lilly Pulitzer dresses and newly retired Jack Rogers, I realized there truly was no simple solution.  In the world of fashion, conforming to a trend is conflicting and controversial. Individuality is ultimately essential.  That being said: I’m here to save your “How To Dress For an Interview” Google searches.  Grab a pen ladies, and take notes – because let’s face it, normal gets you nowhere.

  1. Break up with your makeup

Realize this, and realize this fast: This isn’t Sex and The City, and that MAC Bubblegum Yum-Yum lipstick you “diiiiiiie” for will be your ultimate demise in an interview.  Break up with your makeup now.  This isn’t the Victoria Secret’s Fashion Show, and walking in ten minutes late to your interview with perfect makeup is always noted. Say it with me: tinted moisture. Two coats mascara. Done. Moving on.

2.   You can’t lose with smooth

As the spokesperson for curls, I feel your pain when I regret to inform you that unnatural curls and fancy updos are a definite don’t.  This isn’t prom, ladies! Instead, invest in blow dryer nozzle and a round brush so you can work your hair into a style that looks effortless, yet professional.  If you have naturally tame hair, whether straight, curly, or somewhere in between: rock it!  A few hairspray spritzes to avoid frizz and flyaways should do the trick.

3.  #AllBlackEverything

You are not Regina George, and even if your interview lands on a Wednesday… do not wear pink. Opt for black. All black. Anything from an A line skirt, to a black tuxedo blazer will absolutely work. Words of Wisdom: Think of what you would wear for Brunch at your Grandmother’s house, and go from there.

4.  Shoes Are Your Sole Soul Mates

The only thing a potential, future employer analyzes more than your resume are your shoes (not kidding!). There is a fine line between the Saturday Night Stiletto and the Sunday Morning flat, so find your happy medium. For my 21st birthday I invested in Christian Louboutin Pigalles and religiously wear them to any important event. While you don’t have to be borderline psychotic like me and drop your life savings; you should opt for a pair of black pumps that will work for just about anything.

5. Less is always more

As for the size of your purse, the type of earrings, ring or no rings… just remember less is more. And simplicity is always successful. Frankly, I try to avoid arm parties and attention grabbing purses. I always opt for dainty rings, a watch and diamond studs – but feel free to create your own rendition.

Inevitably, it all comes down to a moment of opportunity and seizing such. These five key points were cultivated through trials and many, many errors during my time working at People’s Revolution. So let’s face it, you could follow these steps to a “T” and still bomb the interview [and that’s okay]. The thing to remember is the show always goes on, and your fashion statement will be forever impressed on that employer, so whether or not you get the job: work it, and work it well.
