Miss Mixtape's Band of the Week: Grace Potter and the Nocturnals

By Anna Wagner
November 7, 2011 - 10:47am

Band of the Week: Grace Potter and The Nocturnals I often envy women who were my age in the sixties.  Their style was impeccable, “jeggings” were nonexistent, and bright colors and crazy prints were all the rage. It was a psychedelic time for everything, but especially music. If I had a time machine, the only year I’d want to go to would be 1969 so I could experience Woodstock. I would’ve killed (okay, maybe I’d give someone an Indian burn) to see Hendrix, setting his guitar aflame and the lovely, crazy, and enthusiastic Janis Joplin shimmying and belting out, “Cry Baby”. These musicians were not only talented but, for lack of a better word, ballsy. READ MORE

A NY State of Mind: Arnie B. is the New Toads

By Erica Siciliano

With the leaves on the mountain change from green to yellow, it’s about that time of year that mid semester blues kick in.  Suddenly, “club lib” becomes the hot spot around campus and getting through mid terms becomes the highest priority.  After spending one long night in the library, I realized that the library is just like going to Toads. Rainy day slums have plagued us nearly every other day for the past month. I’m surprised I haven’t drowned yet. So besides the obviousness of doing your homework and studying, what else is there to do on these dreary days? Movies READ MORE

A Cup of Tia: Good Eats on the Cheap

It was one of the last beautiful and sunny days of the fall. I slipped on my Toms shoes and walked out into the 80-degree weather. Fortunately, I’m one of the lucky ones to have Mondays off from school. My mom was here visiting for the day and I had a craving for Thai food so we drove over to New Haven in search of a place to eat. Parking is a little difficult to find but once you have it you just have to fill the meter with a dollar or two and start exploring!

Miss Mixtape: Toad's Place: Where Did the Legends Go?

By Anna Wagner
October 13, 2011 - 12:52pm

Toad’s Place: A place where dreams come true and miracles happen. Where you can find your Prince Charming and dance the night away…NOT! Call me a freak, but I cannot stand the fact that Toad’s is the place to be on Saturday nights. You dress to the nines just so you can wait in line for an hour and dance for two.  Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against Toad’s, but I do have a small vendetta against Toad’s being known for “Qpac” girls (the Yalie boys love you, ladies) and the infamous slobcats. Its reputation has been tarnished by the “slutbus” and countless amount of vomiting freshmen. Back in the day, Toad’s was where the legends played, now it has been reduced to entertaining wannabe Snookies and Pauly-Ds....

NY State of Mind: Battling your Image Issues

By Erica Siciliano
October 7, 2011 - 10:59am

When I was younger, I would always get upset when shopping for clothes, especially jeans. My mom would turn to me and say, “Erica, you know why all the size 0’s and 4’s are out here?  Because normal people don’t wear these. The regular sizes are gone because people buy those.  Not these sizes.”  It took me forever to realize what she truly meant.  At that time my response was a sarcastic eye roll and more pouting but eight years later, I know what she really means. Normal people aren’t a size 2, and I shouldn’t attain to be one. READ MORE

NY State of Mind: Don't Drink and Text!

By Erica Siciliano
September 27, 2011 - 4:27pm

After a night out of drinking and partying the first thing I reach for, aside from the Advil, is my phone.  Scrambling through BBM’s, Facebook messages, and texts to make sure I didn’t say anything that would be require me to hide under a rock for the rest of my life. Thankfully nothing was sent (this week that is), but it begs me to ask the question, why do girls love to send drunken texts even though it can only bring embarrassment?
