The Top 4 Free ARC Fitness Classes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Queen's U chapter.

Just because you’re not willing to shell out the $90 to get a Fitness Plus membership doesn’t mean that you can’t get a good workout in this semester! If you didn’t already know, the ARC offers 10 free classes each week, from Zumba to Yoga and everything in between. All you need to do is go to the front desk to sign a waiver and get a sticker on your student card. Here’s a breakdown of the best four worth checking out (in my own humble opinion, of course!)

4. 50/50

Time: Mondays @ 1:30PM

This class combines cardio with strength training to create a best-of-both-worlds workout! The instructor is super energetic and always provides modified versions of each exercise in case you can’t do the regular one. Another great part of this class is that it’s never too busy – you can show up 10 minutes before class starts and you’ll be golden!

3. Strong by Zumba

Time: Saturdays @ 2:30PM

In all honesty, when I went to my first “Strong by Zumba” class, it was nothing like what I had expected in all the best ways! I had done regular Zumba classes before and thought that this would be pretty much the same thing. Boy, was I wrong. This class is much less focused on the dancing, and much more on strength conditioning using your own body weight. I was sore for two days after and loved it! If you think that you have two left feet (and therefore vow to never do traditional Zumba), this is a great class to start with!

2. Zumba

Time: Mondays @ 7:30PM

Oh how much I love Zumba! It’s basically like having a dance party and workout in one – it’s so much fun! The instructors use modern music which makes it that much more excellent to jam out to. The only bummer about this class are the lines – you have to get there between 20-30 minutes before class starts in order get a spot, and it’s always super crowded inside as well. Just goes to show how popular the class is!

1. Sunrise Spin

Time: Wednesdays @ 6:45AM

Let me start off by saying that I am by no means a morning person and struggle hardcore to make it to my 8:30’s on time. That being said, I absolutely love going to this class! Yes, getting up at the crack of dawn when it’s still dark outside isn’t fun, but this class makes it worth it! From sprints, to hills, to jumps, you get a full-body workout and amazing sweat sesh. The best part? You’ll leave feeling super accomplished, and it won’t even be 8:00AM yet! If early mornings really aren’t your thing, I’d recommend going to one of the evening spin classes – same great workout at a different time!

Whether you’re a Zumba lover or a Spin Queen, there’s definitely a free class for you at the ARC, so make sure to take advantage of your free membership and try them out!
