DOs and DON’Ts of Partying in University

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Queen's U chapter.

Congratulations, you’ve arrived in the promised land of university partying! Are you ready? Probably, but just in case, here are some tips:

DO use the buddy system.

There is nothing worse than looking around at a party or bar to find yourself alone. Having a buddy guarantees you’ll never experience that and as an added bonus, you’ll never lack a dance partner.

DON’T let your drink out of your sight.

I bet your mom, your teacher, and every orientation leader out there has shared with you this piece of advice. It only takes a second for it to happen and the consequences can be scary, so I’ll just repeat it again for the people in the back.

DO hydrate!

There is nothing that ruins a great night out more than a wicked hangover the next day. There is also nothing worse than attempting those PSYC 100 readings with a pounding hangover.

DON’T let a picture get in the way of a good time.

If you compare your life with your Instagram and Instagram looks cooler, you have a problem. It’s nice to have pictures to look back on, but if you spend half of your evening looking for the perfect lighting and angle, you’ll be missing out on the great memories you’re supposed to be capturing.

DO wear comfortable/maneuverable clothing.

Nobody is saying to show up in sweatpants, hair tied, chilling with no makeup on, but it’s much harder to properly get down on the dance floor if you’re wearing 6” heels instead of a fresh pair of converse.

DON’T get so drunk you don’t remember the night.

It’s dangerous, it’s reckless, and it’s just illogical. What’s the point of having a great time if you can’t even remember it the next day? Enough said.

DO go to house parties.

One day you will graduate university and the days of that random guy from your biology tutorial inviting you to a massive backyard kegger with a few hundred others will be over. Take advantage of this time to get a little wild without having to pay top dollar at those downtown bars.

DON’T let going out get in the way of your school work.

When choosing between hitting the bars or hitting the books, the choice seems pretty easy, but always skipping those Stauffer sessions to go downtown will only lead to a large pile of readings and an even larger stress headache.
