Turkey Dump: The Bright Side to Holiday Breakups

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Purdue chapter.

This is for all of my girls in long distance relationships. Even if you’re not in one, you’ve most likely all heard about the legendary “Turkey drop” also known as “Turkey dump.” Neither phrase conjure up a warm, fuzzy feelings. Urban Dictionary defines “Turkey Dump” as follows: “When a student returning from college breaks up with their significant other from high school,” and it usually occurs during Thanksgiving Break. Since Thanksgiving has already passed, I know a lot of us are single now, including myself. Whether you’re the dumper or the dumpee, let’s lighten the situation by listing a couple pros that can come out of it. I’m sure you all could think of a bunch, but here’s just a few I can really relate to!

You get to stuff your face

Breaking up with your SO gives you an excuse to eat all the ice cream and pizza in the world. No matter how much you’ve been working out, the Turkey Drop is an excuse to completely fill your face with comfort food to cure the heartbreak. Don’t forget to pair this activity with your favorite movie. Personally, I have been watching The Longest Ride. Also if you’re as lucky as I am, your roommate will be more than willing to stay in and have a pizza/movie night with you!

You can spend money on yourself

Think about all the money you’ll be saving this holiday season with one less person to shop for! Now you don’t have to spend the time thinking about what to get your significant other. Now with the extra money, you can treat yourself to a spa day or get that cute top you’ve been dying to grab for a night out. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t spend some of that money already!

You get to date again

You’re on a college campus that is totally overflowing with cute boys. Now, do not get me wrong, it’s very important to take that time after a breakup to recover. However, when you’re ready, it’s a big advantage that you live in the biggest dating pool ever!

More girl time

Now that you’re not dating anyone, you have complete freedom to go out with your girls or stay in for a movie night with them. No more of having to schedule FaceTime calls with your SO, you can do so much more with your friends now. I don’t know about all of you but I’ve been enjoying all the time I have to spend with my friends. I’ve even met new ones!

More time to study

I don’t know about you all, but lately I’ve been dealing with my emotions by channeling them into my studies. That may sound crazy but it has helped me, and I know it can help some of you! We go to Purdue, which means we are going places. Don’t worry about meeting someone new right away. Worry about putting your studies first and being successful!

Breakups are always hard but don’t forget to look at the bright side. It takes times to move on but break ups aren’t always a bad thing! Trust me girls, when I say things get better.
