5 Struggles of Being Young with Tattoos

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Purdue chapter.

As time progresses, society is becoming more accepting of tattoos.  It’s becoming increasingly popular and less taboo amongst the college-aged generation in particular. That being said, if you do decide to get a tattoo, you will inevitably experience various reactions and judgements. Unfortunately, these are not mentioned in the waiver you’ll sign at the shop. Here are five struggles of being tattooed..

1. You are stared at all the time

Sometimes you’ll be walking down an aisle at the grocery store just trying to pick up a package of paper towels, and next thing you know all eyes are on you. After discreetly checking to make sure there is nothing on your face, you’ll realize that they are actually staring at your tattoo.

2.You get stopped for advice from random people

This may not actually be a struggle. Assisting someone in finding a good artist or helping them decide on a location for their tattoo can be an amazing experience. However, when you’re in a rush to get to your next class or an important meeting, it can be a hassle to be stopped by a stranger who is tattoo-curious.

3. You get asked some very interesting questions…

“When is your tattoo coming off?”, “So what are you going to do about your tattoos when you get married?”. These are just a couple of the interesting questions I have been asked, and there’s no doubt I’ll receive more. Protip, if you’re getting married make sure your significant other isn’t bothered by your ink or the fact that you may get more of it.

4. And you get asked some semi-rude questions as well

“You realized it’s permanent and won’t go away when you regret it, right?” “Do you know you are going to look soon bad when you’re old?”. Okay Lacy, do you know you’re going to look old and wrinkly when you age too, tattoos or not?

5. But the biggest struggle is never having enough money to get every tattoo you want

Tattoos are expensive and they add up fast. A 2”x4” tattoo can be up to $200. It seems like no matter how much money you set aside, there’s always a new tattoo idea that’ll cost another couple hundred dollars.
