10 Facts Everyone Should Know About Pugs

1. Pugs are widely known to be the oldest breed of dog in existence. Records of pugs date back to 400 B.C.

 

2. Pugs were originally bred to sit in the laps of Chinese Emperors, becoming the official dog of royalty.

 

3. It is believed that pugs were revered by the Chinese because the wrinkles formed by their extra flaps of skin resembled Chinese characters. 

 

4. In the 16th Century Prince William was saved by his pug, Pompey. Spanish troops came to attack his came, but Pompey’s bark alerted William and he escaped. 

 

5. Due to their short legs and trouble breathing, pugs are usually not very good swimmers – and may often have to wear a life vest. 

 

6. Unlike more energetic dog species, pugs like to sleep an average of 14 hours a day. 

 

7. In Germany, pugs are called mops. 

 

8. A group of pugs is called a Grumble. 

 

9. While their species overall usually doesn’t bark much, pugs often like to use vocals in other ways – sometimes which resembles “singing”. 

 

10. Because of their short noses, pugs are very prone to catching colds. If you take them outside in the winter, they will need to wear their coats!
