Not-So Mainstream Horror Movies

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at PS Behrend chapter.

When one thinks of horror movies, the first movies that come to mind are Nightmare On Elm Street, Chucky and Halloween, but there are so many more than just the basic few that we all know and love. And although there are definitely some stinkers out there, there are also some that have not got the recognition that they deserve. So, if you are a scary movie addict, here are some titles that are certainly worth the watch.

1. My Soul To Take

According to the students of Riverton High School, there is a legend that has haunted their town. The legend tells a story of a serial killer who swore he would return to murder the seven children born the night he died. 16 years later, students start to go missing and people start to wonder, is it possible? Has the psychopath been reincarnated as one of the seven teens, or did he survive the night he was left for dead?

2. Stay Alive

After a few of his friend’s died, a man name Hutch takes on the job to find out the real cause of death. After doing some research, he discovers a strange video game. Hutch and his friends start playing the game and soon discover that the horror game, based on the life of the evil Countess Elizabeth Bathory, is a little more interactive than they thought.

3. Megan is Missing

Megan Stewart and her best friend Amy Herman may be very different from each other, however, they are best friends. Megan is the popular girl who lives a rebellious lifestyle, while Amy is a quiet, socially awkward 13-year-old. Megan meets a boy online and she soon realizes that he might not be the guy she thought. As soon as her friend goes missing, Amy makes it her mission to find Megan, but what she discovers at the end is something much worse.

4. The Voices

This is a movie that isn’t as scary but it is definitely a bizarre movie. Jerry is an average blue-collar guy. After an event, he must see a court-appointed psychiatrist. The psychiatrist tries to help him live a normal life, however, his evil talking cat and benevolent talking dog make that kind of difficult. Jerry must decide whether he wants to strive for normalcy, or indulge in a much much darker path.

5. The Taking of Deborah Logan

Deborah Logan is a woman who is being watched over by her daughter. Although the situation is tough, the daughter blames all the odd events going on on her Mother’s old age. However, as time goes on, one sees that the movie is no longer just a simple documentary about Alzheimer’s, but a movie about something a lot more terrifying.

6. REC Genesis

As everyone knows, sequels usually do not end very well, however, this one is a game changer. The REC movie series is the series that the Quarantine movies are based on. REC Genesis is the third movie of a Spanish series that revolve around rabies infested zombies. The movie starts out at a beautiful wedding, however, the wedding quickly turns into a nightmare and the guest must fight if they ever want this party to end.

7. I Spit On Your Grave

Writer, Jennifer Hills, decides to take a small vacation to relax and work on her book, but what happens at her cabin changes the vibe of her trip entirely. Something that starts out as a joke turns violent and the predators who decided to mess with Jennifer soon realize that they messed with the wrong chick.

8. Disturbia

After punching a teacher, Kale Brecht is punished with house arrest. After a couple hours, he realizes how boring his house is so he starts to spy on his neighbors, however, what he sees is a lot more than what he expected. After no one believes Kale, he must fight to find the truth in order to not only protect himself but also his family.
