Facial treatments can be a little out there sometimes. Whether it be snail slime, needles and heaven knows what other “natural” ingredient is involved. So see for yourself what facials our writers have done their research on to bring to you!

Alex Sienerth: Derma Rolling

Have you ever thought about rolling tiny little needles all over your face to make yourself look younger? Yeah.. me either. But this is a real thing and it’s actually become pretty popular. A derma roller is a plastic skin tool where the top is covered in micro-fine needles. The function of this tool is to roll it on the face using the tiny needles to cause mini abrasions in the skin. The skin will then grow new cells to repair the damage caused. Collagens will rise to the surface to help repair this damage (which is really not as bad as it may seem), helping reduce fine lines and wrinkles. I also helps exfoliate pores in the process.

Derma rolling is said to seem scarier than it really is. There are several different needle sizes and most people say that it hardly hurts – if at all. Some derma rolling regulars choose to use a numbing cream on their face before. It would be very important to keep the tool sanitized properly as it is puncturing your skin.

There are many proven positive effects derma rolling has for the skin, however, it is a fairly new skin care routine so long term effects are not yet known. There is the possibility it can actually make your skin worse after an extended period of time. It may actually cause your skin to appear saggier if you’re a frequent derma roller. I have never tried derma rolling and I’m not sure that I ever will. It may seem like a great way to help your skin but there are too many unanswered questions for my taste.

Anonymous:

I am about as bland as can be when it comes to skin care. I use makeup wipes, cleanser, and moisturizer. Every now and again I will go crazy and use a fancy mask or two. When researching some insane skill care ideas I wondered if maybe I am playing it a little too safe! Here are some of the favorites I found:

1. Placenta Alexander Wang, an American fashion designer, swears by placenta on his face. He also commented that he puts lots of crazy things on his face… things that burn and turn his face red. But when he wakes up in the morning his face is perfect. Sounds super weird (also where does he get this placenta), but gotta give it to him… his face is amazing smooth and beautiful looking.

2. Bird Poop Nightingale Excrement… aka bird shit… aka Geisha facial… is supposed to make your skin clean and glowy.  Bird poop is unique becuase when birds do the nasty they poop and pee out of the same hole… making a creation that is filled with nitrogen-rich urea and guanine, an amino acid. Sounds refreshing (not)!

3. Infant Foreskin

Raved about by the one and only Oprah Winfrey, infant foreskin is supposed to rewind old skin back years! Don’t worry, if you want to give this a try you won’t have to rob a hospital. There are a few companys that sell facial cleansers  infused with infant foreskin but it’s not cheap. 30 grams cost about $300, but hey you can’t put a price on beauty right?

4. Semen Next time your guy misses, it might be in your advantage. Semen can actually give you a radiant face. As most of us know, semen contains urea (aka pee), which is a natural toner. Spermine, found in sperm, can make your face incredibly soft, and reduce wrinkles. Spermine is often used at upscale spas and fancy creams that can cost over $250. Instead you can text that boy you met at the bar!

Sorya Nasir: Back Facials

When you think of a facial, you think of a relaxing day with product soaking into your face. But did you know you could apply those products to other parts of your body to give them the same moisturizing, exfoliating and smoothing effect on areas that are not just your face?

Back facials are a new and great service that are now offered at many spas around the country. They can do anything from exfoliate and moisturize to clean and clear your skin and it is a service that will definitely come in handy for the upcoming warm weather!

The process is pretty simple; you go in and get the product applied. As the product is on, the esthetician will put a steamer on, the steam opens up your pores so that the product can enter even deeper. After the session, not only will you be relaxed but also you will have a beautiful and healthy back!

Alyson Munson: Coffee Scrub

It may seem weird, but coffee is really good for your skin. Not only does it exfoliate really well, but it energizes your skin and makes it look amazing! The caffeine in the coffee makes your skin firmer. A coffee scrub is made for your entire body, not just your face. To use it all you have to do is shower, scrub your body, let it dry, then rinse off. Many different companies have made their own version of the same project, but there are simple DIYs all over the internet with as little as two ingredients.
