How To: Use Your Student Discount

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Providence chapter.

Everyone knows that it’s difficult to shop on a college budget. But with the changing seasons, we all feel the need to revamp our wardrobe. So here are a few student discounts that you may not know about:

1.  J. Crew
J. Crew aims their line at college students. So whether you’re out looking for cute basic pieces or if you want to treat yourself, all you need to do is remember your student ID. Just by presenting your ID at checkout, you receive an automatic 15% off your entire purchase. And since J. Crew is a little on the expensive side, this will make you feel a little less guilty when you splurge.

2. Banana Republic
Banana Republic is made for college girls who are looking for that clean-cut professional style—dresses, blazers, and clothes that are perfect for an interview. They target the college student and also offer a similar discount. Like J. Crew, you just present your student ID and receive a 15% discount—even applicable to items already on sale!

3. Madewell
Madewell is a tad more stylish than its sister store, J. Crew, but it offers the same 15% discount at checkout. And if you’re looking for a great selection of denim, Madewell is the place to look. They have every style for every body-type. The price of most of the clothes can be a little intimidating (falling in the 3 figures), but the 15% certainly does help. Madewell is an “investment” store—it’s a perfect place to get staple items (like that perfect pair of jeans) because they’ll last a long time and won’t go out of style.

4. Rugby Ralph Lauren
Rugby’s target market is the college student. Unlike the previous three though, Rugby allows the student to use their 15% discount online as well as in store. Register on the website with your .edu email address and you’ll receive a confirmation code in an email that will be applicable for the deal.

5. Websites
Whenever I procrastinate on my homework, I always tend to find myself browsing for clothes on the websites of my favorite stores. But I recently discovered the ultimate in online-shopping websites for students: studentrate.com. This website offers deals for different stores, from shoes to gadgets, clothing to food and everything in between. Just register with your .edu account and you’ll be led to a variety of deals. Just click on their link and shop away! You can get discounts, free shipping, and even cash back on your orders sent directly into your studentrate account.

A second website I would definitely recommend is  collegefashion.net. Collegefashion.net is a blog that is operated by girls from different universities all over the country like you, who are also on the hunt for a good deal. They write reviews for all of the product they use, so it’s a reliable second source. There is also a feature titled “Coupons & Sales” every week which features the week’s best online shopping deals.

So go ahead, use these tips, don’t feel guilty and shop on. Looking good doesn’t always have to break the bank!
