Things You Need To Know To Be A Good Roommate

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Point Park chapter.

One major adjustment for many when moving to college is learning to share a room with someone, especially someone you haven’t spent your whole life with. Moving in with one or more roomies is a stressful process for many. However, with some simple tips, you and your roommates are sure to be on great terms!

Share the Space

When move in day comes around, the first thing to do to make sure you get along with your roommate(s) is to create a plan with them to make sure that you each have a space to call your own in the room. In my room, we each had a wall to decorate, our bed space, and our desk space to call our own little abode and decorate as we pleased!

Communication Is Key

Another thing to keep in mind is how important it is to communicate with your roommate(s). After settling in, make it known that you all can talk to each about anything. If something is bothering one roommate and they feel uncomfortable to talk about it, it can lead to a lot of unresolved tension in your room…. something no one wants! Try your best to get along with your roommate(s) and have a good relationship with lots of communication, and you will be sure to have a happy dorm life!

Try To Be Friends

When I moved to college, I knew I wanted my roommates to be some of my best friends, and oh boy, did I luck out! When you find out who your roommate(s) are, start a relationship! Talk about favorite movies, what snacks they can’t live without, the music they love, and whatever else is important to know about them. You have to live with these people for your entire academic year, and it is so much more enjoyable if you can be friends. My roommates and I share snacks, have movie nights, go out and have girls days, and try to hang out often! Life gets busy and we all have our own friends, but getting to be best friends with your roommates is the greatest gift!

Overall, if you follow these tips, you are surely to have a good year living with a new person. Sure, having a roommate(s) for the first time can be scary, but sometimes it can turn out so great! Enjoying the room you’re living in and enjoying the people you live with makes all the difference in your college career!
