Starting in the Fall 2014 semester, HC Point Park will be under the leadership of two new Campus Correspondents! Lexie Mikula (sophomore Photojournalism major) and Haleigh Kopinski (senior Creative Writing major) are next in line to take Point Park’s chapter to a new level. Here’s what they had to say about their upcoming position:

What other activities or involvement do you have on campus?

L- CAB’s Community Service Committee and Fashion Club.

H- Intern at the American Red Cross.

What are your dream jobs?

L- I would love to work for a women’s magazine like Cosmo or Teen Vogue as a photographer/writer, or be a documentary photographer!

H- To become a book or magazine editor and do freelance writing on the side!

What made you interested in joining Her Campus?

L- I had a good friend in high school that writes for Her Campus at Penn State and has become the national career editor! I read a lot of her articles when I was in high school, so when I saw that Cassi was trying to begin a chapter at Point Park, I was super excited to be apart of it! I think it is such a great community for college girls.

H- Being a creative writing major, I’ve always loved writing and have been interested in the editing aspect as well. The first time I read Her Campus it seemed like a sort of college Cosmopolitan and I immediately knew I had to become a part of it!

What has the best part(s) of your Her Campus experience been?

L- Meeting such wonderful people that are passionate about very similar things that I am passionate about! Also, there is nothing more rewarding than receiving great feedback from readers (or getting the week’s top views!)

H- Gaining more experience in the writing field. There’s a fine difference between blogging about your own stories and blogging about a particular topic. In college and even high school, we learn how to write research papers and even current event articles, but it’s a lot different writing style stories or conducting interviews. I love learning these new things and I absolutely love our staff. Though I’ve only been with Her Campus a short time, it’s been great and I can’t wait to see what is yet to come!

Why should other people want to get involved with HC in the future?

L- Her Campus such a fun way to build your portfolio and make really great connections on campus!

H- Her Campus is a fantastic opportunity to not only improve yourself as a writer or photographer, but to meet so many great people as well. I signed up to interview Jenna Sulecki for Her Campus, and it turns out I’m actually living with her next year. Along with improving your skills, it’s a great resume-builder and you can use your Her Campus articles or pictures in your professional portfolio. Plus, we always have so much fun!

What do you hope to bring to Point Park’s chapter of HC as the new co-CC?

L- I want HC to be the most talked about organization on campus! I want to boost our readership and on-campus involvement, and maybe even show prominence in our city.

H- I hope to be seen not only as co-CC, but I want others on Her Campus to see me as a mentor and as a friend, as well as Lexie. College is hard. Work is hard. Relationships are hard. All of these things can be overwhelming at times and I hope that everyone on our Her Campus staff will see me as more than a co-CC and can come to talk to me when they need advice or help. If I can just bring a sense of leadership with Lexie to continue on what Cassi has already started, I’ll be more than happy.

What makes Point Park’s chapter of HC so unique?

L- Personally, I think it’s that we use almost all original photography. I may be a bit biased because I’m a photographer myself, but seriously, how cool is that?

H- We have the whole city as our oyster. While we are a smaller school (and a small chapter), other schools are situated in the middle of nowhere and have limited resources to write about. In Pittsburgh, we have numerous opportunities that rural or even suburban colleges do not have. We’re unique because we can walk to museums, PNC Park or Heinz Field, concerts, etc. There’s never an excuse not to go out and find a good story (besides the awful weather!) because there’s always one even just a block away.

How do you plan to gear up over the summer for Her Campus when you’re back at school in the fall?

L- I plan on reading up on all types of magazines and blogs to inspire new and unique content, as well as keep in touch with Haleigh to plan our course of action for next semester!

H- Over the summer I plan on keeping a list of article ideas I randomly think of. Some of the best ideas come when you least expect so I’m definitely going to keep track of those for next semester. I’m also going to Skype or Facebook with Lexie a lot over the summer so we can continue staying on board with each other in whatever we do. We talked about trying to communicate with incoming freshmen as soon as possible for the fall semester, so we’ll have to discuss ways to do that, especially when it comes closer to that time.
