Serengetee: Giving Back to the World One Pocket Tee at a Time

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

I know for me and probably for many of you, there’s a huge gap between wanting to give back to the community and make a difference, and actually doing so.  You plan on going to community service events, fundraisers, whatever it may be- but between schoolwork, your job, and extracurricular activities, sometimes it’s easier to make the verbal commitment than to actually do it.

A couple of months ago, I was procrastinating doing my homework by creeping on Facebook.  A post popped up on my newsfeed from a girl in my high school, asking her friends to like a page for a company called Serengetee—she had just become a campus rep. Serengetee is a company that sells crew neck tees and long sleeves, V-necks, tank tops, crop tops, and their newest line of shorts. The shirts have a pocket on them that comes in different patterns: tribal print, American flags, skulls, floral, striped, basically anything and everything.  Each pocket is made of a fabric from different countries worldwide, and the proceeds of each fabric go towards a specific charity that empowers growth and social change in that country. Whether it be funding education or building schools in Africa, helping those affected by the earthquake in Japan find relief and recovery, or providing underprivileged families suffering from severe health illnesses with medical care and treatment, this company is not just about the clothes—it’s focus is to create a change in the world.

You may be thinking, is this girl really trying to tell me that by buying clothes, something that I already have enough of, I’m going to make a difference in a country thousands of miles away?  That’s exactly what I’m telling you.  Serengetee is a great way to give back without having to put much work in.  For the amount of clothes that we all buy and don’t actually need, how much money could we put towards something way bigger than our own personal lives?  So far, Serengetee has donated a total of $32,053, and has a goal of $3,000 in donations for the month of October.  Something as simple as buying clothes could improve someone else’s life drastically.

You may also be thinking, this girl is just trying to get me to buy things because she’s a campus rep and wants to make money.  When I joined the Serengetee team of East Coast Reps, I was totally unaware of the fact that you could make (a very small amount) of commission as a campus rep.  I went into this job looking to get involved in a brand different from the typical company that exploits you for your money on expensive products for their own benefit.  It amazed me that by buying a t-shirt, you could do something great, and feel great.  One t-shirt could provide a child with food, or maybe a desk to learn at, because some country’s schools don’t have the necessities for an education.

Maybe you’re interested, maybe you’re not.  Either way, the proceeds of the shirt go towards charity, not towards me.  Serengetee’s mission and motto “Wear the World” is different from most clothing companies. It’s not all about looking cute in life, it’s about having fun, giving back, helping others, being globally aware, and yeah, looking damn good while doing it.
