Preparing for THE Exam

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

With just five minutes left, I had a mental breakdown. I can’t get any answers right on the “Logic Games” section of the LSAT, and I keep asking myself, “What’s the point?”

The situation I described above can be applied at least once to the feeling of panic all college students feel while studying for the test that could determine their future (think GRE, MCAT, LSAT). Thus, here are some study tips that I’ve acquired from peers who have taken the exams; hopefully they will make your studying/overall test taking go a lot more smoothly.

GRE:

  • It’s not like the SAT where you can just wing it. You must study.
  • Definitely review the math concepts you’ve learned, even if you think you won’t need them.
  • Don’t try to memorize vocabulary. It wastes time and there are other things worth looking over.
  • Make sure your essay is in the stereotypical essay format: introduction, supporting paragraphs, and conclusion.

LSAT:

  • Don’t take it. (Just kidding!)
  • Study. Hard.
  • Do not panic when you first start studying.  The exam itself is a huge game. Once you learn the rules of the game, the questions answer themselves.
  • Don’t start out timing yourself. Right off the bat, you won’t answer the questions in time. Once you’re comfortable with a concept, then time yourself.
  • Practice those logic games. Some people love them and it’s their favorite part, but I think they suck.

MCAT:

  • Go over the concepts that you think you know.
  • Do practice tests—a bunch of them. They help you gain the confidence you need to be successful when the real exam comes.
  • Take a couple of days off before the test. Don’t cram the information into your brain when it gets close to testing time. It won’t be beneficial and will leave you feeling drained.

Again, these are just a few of the tips that I’ve gotten from friends and from my own experience. Do you have any other tips? Comment below!

Good luck all you test takers. Let’s kick some serious ass!
