Wanna Tutor Child Refugees? Keep It RealBy October 5, 2012 - 12:31am Last semester on a bit of a whim, my roommate Matt and I decided to join Keep it Real, a club that helps Somali-Bantu Refugees in Pittsburgh. I’ll never forget the first time that we met our family with 9 kids, the majority of whom are under grade 7. I was initially overwhelmed. Each child wanted to be held, wanted to play their own games, and Matt and I needed to simultaneously tutor them. After a few weeks though, we really got into the swing of things. Now our kids are truly like our brothers and sisters- they look up to us, and it’s our job to make sure that they stay motivated and go to college. READ MORE |

A HC Pitt Congrats to Our Favorite Genovia Princess turned Newlywed, Anne HathawayBy October 2, 2012 - 12:00pm This Saturday, everybody’s favorite princess (of Genovia, duh) Anne Hathaway swapped vows with longtime beau Adam Shulman on a private estate in Big Sur, California. Although you might be disappointed to learn she wasn’t wearing her Catwoman suit, Hathaway wore a beautiful gown designed by Valentino. The veteran designer gushed to E! News, “She’s a very good friend of mine, like a daughter! She deserves what she has in this life, meaning that she’s already a great star. She’s going to be a great, great, great, great thousand times great star. She has all the qualities.” READ MORE |

Cooking with Mike: Meet my Boyfriend (aka Food)By September 28, 2012 - 3:59pm Hey ladies! Nice to meet you all. I'm Mike and I'm new around here. The fine gals in charge of HC Pitt have allowed me to start my very own food blog on their website, so look for weekly posts from me about all things edible. I'm hoping to include some of my own cooking stories and tips as well as input on local restaurants and grocers around Pittsburgh and any interesting foodie stuff (like recipes!) I might find floating around the Internet. READ MORE |

Chronicles of Pitt in London: A Collegiette's Life Abroad - Part 3 [PICS]By September 27, 2012 - 1:08pm So it’s already week three here. While I’m still almost getting run over every time I cross the street and I’m totally cursing the U.S. economy for how little my dollar actually gets me, I have almost conquered the most important thing here: the Tube. Unlike in the states, hardly anyone drives. EVERYONE takes the subway. Technically it’s called the Underground but everyone calls it the Tube. Basically, the Tube map looks like a 1st grader designed it. With over ten lines going in every odd direction, it’s overwhelming to say the least. READ MORE |

Communicating with Hands: Understanding American Sign LanguageBy September 19, 2012 - 9:55am I have already learned so much about how it feels to actually be communicating through American Sign Language in just a few short classes here at Pitt. It opened my eyes to a whole new perspective on communication and I started thinking how I am very excited to learn more about the deaf culture. I couldn’t get enough of all of the realities presented to the class since this culture was a completely different lifestyle than what I am personally accustomed to. So, I decided to interview my teacher for ASL, Erin “Airza” Bosley. Since she is deaf, I thought she could get her views across and hopefully change the minds of others. READ MORE |

That One Time at Trapeze and Ziplining School...By September 7, 2012 - 10:00am One step off the platform and I was zipping at 35 mph over a lake and turning my knuckles white. One step off the platform and I was flying through the air doing flips over a bar. This summer, I conquered my fears the hard way, by facing them head on. Not only did work take over my off-season, but so did becoming a fitter, better me. Every morning at 5:30am, I was out running on the boardwalk and lifting weights at the gym. After getting into much better shape, I decided to treat myself to an adventure or two. I chose zip lining and trapeze school. Both sound insane, and they were, but both totally worth it. READ MORE |

Chronicles of Pitt in London: A Collegiette's Life AbroadBy September 4, 2012 - 1:50pm My visa is here, my flight is booked, my housing is assigned, I have my class and internship schedule, and I’m officially moved out of Oakland for the next four months. The reality of the trip is finally hitting me. I’m excited, but I’m also very nervous. I grew up in Pittsburgh, and while I don’t go home or see my parents too often, it’s a comfort knowing that I can always drive home if I forget something or hang out with my mom if I have a bad day. I’m getting ahead of myself, though. READ MORE |
