Her Campus: So, tell us a little about how you got involved with Her Campus in the first place.
Kelly Dasta: Before my freshman year I was browsing the list of student organizations looking for writing-related clubs I could join. I found Her Campus and started reading it online, and then I found HC’s table at the activities fair once the school year started, and I was hooked!
HC: What’s your favorite type of article to write? Favorite type of thing to write that’s not for the site?
KD: I love to write articles that touch on serious issues. I’ve written articles covering political events and articles advocating for certain causes such as preventing sexual assault. These are my favorite, because I believe the importance of writing is to help and inform people.
My favorite type of writing outside of Her Campus is fiction writing. I want to be an author with whatever I end up doing when I graduate, and right now I’ve been writing a book in my free time.
HC: What is your favorite thing about the organization?
KD: I love how Her Campus is an outlet for women writers. We see in the world a disparity between how much work by men gets published compared to work by women, despite there being more women in writing classes. Her Campus helps fill that gap while giving female collegiates a place where they can read fun articles they can relate to.
HC: What are some of your goals as future VP of Her Campus Pitt?
KD: I want everyone in Her Campus to get to know each other by hosting more bonding activities and opportunities to talk to each other at meeting. We are a big organization, so it can be hard sometimes to even know everyone’s names. I also want to encourage people to write more, because when we have more content being posted, we get more people to read Her Campus. Also writing is awesome and I want everyone to enjoy it!
HC: What is something that our readers might not know about you?
KD: I may not look like it, but I have an obsession with pop punk music. I’ve been to Warped Tour twice and have seen more bands than I can count. All Time Low is my absolute favorite band, and I’m seeing them for the fourth time this summer!
HC: What are your summer plans?
KD: I have a writing internship with the PDCDC, which is an organization dedicated to improving the city of Pittsburgh. I also plan on catching up on reading and writing I don’t have time for during the semester.
HC: What are three things you HAVE to accomplish before you graduate Pitt/in your next two years?
KD:
1. I want to finish my novel and hopefully start the process of getting it published.
2. Travel!
3. Okay, this probably won’t happen, but I really want to ride Dippy the Dinosaur.
