How to Make the Most of an All-nighter during Finals Week

1) Make a to-do list, and make it specific. Everything you need to do before class tomorrow should be listed so you leave enough time to eat and breathe. Want to fit in a shower? Write it down. Want to get a snack from the corner store? Write it down. This will give you productive things to do during a work break rather than scrolling through Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Tinder… you get my point. Also, crossing each task out as you go along will give you a sense of accomplishment. If it helps, break down assignments into bullet points on your list. Write down each individual chapter rather than “four chapters of _______.”

2) Plan for procrastination. Write “check email” or “check Facebook” down on your list so you can give yourself a break without getting too sidetracked. If you’ve already crossed it off, you don’t need to do it another three times. If you still need a break, do other little assignments to break up the big project. This will keep your productivity levels high and prevent you from getting tired.

3) Bring Snacks. Don’t give yourself another reason to abandon your work when getting hungry. Since you will be awake much longer than your body is used to, it will seek more fuel than usual.

4) Don’t get too comfortable. Your body needs to associate your bed with sleep, not homework. Studying in a setting you’re not usually awake in can confuse your body and cause trouble falling asleep. There’s also the fact that at one point your body did think that “bed=sleep,” so how productive can you really be lying down with your head against a soft pillow? Get up! Sit at a desk or a big table to spread out all of your things, and make sure the room is well lit. Light will simulate daytime, helping you stay awake and alert.

5) Don’t sleep a wink. This may sound backwards, but napping for only an hour interrupts your REM cycle and will make you feel even more exhausted. If you’re really desperate for some shuteye, make sure it’s at least an hour-and-a-half. Otherwise, reward yourself with a bountiful slumber after finishing all of your work!
