Getting Over Gym Anxiety

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

I know I’m not alone when it comes to the anxiety of exercising in public recreational facilities.  If this is something that you go through, remember that the main reason you’re even at this gym is to better yourself and/or your health.  Unfortunately, once you get into the room and notice how many people there are running non-stop on treadmills, working the Stairmasters, lifting weights, and doing things that you couldn’t even fathom trying, the anxiety comes rushing in!

I recently went to the Peterson Event Center’s recreational facility to work out and all of my past anxieties came back and smacked me in the face.  Some thoughts that might be running through your mind:

·         “OMG, I’m going to look totally out of shape!”

·         “Everyone is looking at me!”

·         “All these people look so fit compared to me…”

·         “I wish I looked like her/him.”

·         “Holy crap what if someone I know sees me!”

·         “I wonder what my hair looks like right now… What will it look like when I’m done!?”

·         “I hope I’m not sweating in weird places!”

·         “Don’t breathe too heavy! Please don’t make my breathing so loud that everyone can hear me!”

These are just the predominant ones I find myself thinking, as well as those of some of my friends.  A lot of people have anxiety about working out in front of people, especially if it’s for the first time.  It’s a good thing to remind yourself of your own insecurities, but also remind yourself that those people who are staring at you with judging eyes are also insecure within themselves.  “Misery loves company,” is the old saying!  The reason people go to the gym is to change their physical appearance and to improve their health.  Don’t put your mental health at risk in the process.

Half of the time, the same people go to the gym at the Pete at the same times.  So, if you are going and it’s your fist or second time, then maybe they’re looking at you because it’s a new face and a change in pace.  Also ladies, that guy looking at you from across the room may even find you attractive!  Don’t always think the absolute worst!  The more you go to the gym and exercise, the more confidence you will build up about yourself and your body.  New experiences are essential to growth and improvement, which make up the bulk of your visiting the gym anyway.  Don’t be ashamed for wanting to improve yourself. Go for it, and I guarantee you will love yourself for it.

Keep these thoughts in mind:

·         You are your worst enemy when it comes to self-improvement.

·         Have fun, “Just do it,” and maybe even strike a pose or two while stretching!

·         Exercising is a holistic activity so take advantage of it and don’t let anyone get you down.
