Face Food: What Can Help or Harm Your Skin

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

College normally consists of many things that cause stress. Therefore, when it comes to our complexion, it’s nice to have one less thing to worry about. One major factor as to whether or not we have acne is the food we eat. Here are some different foods that can benefit one’s facial complexion:

Kale: Kale is packed with vitamins, including vitamin A, which is commonly used to treat acne. It may seem like just another boring vegetable, but you can make really yummy chips by baking the leaves and sprinkling a tiny bit of salt on them. Kale also tastes good in soup.

Green Tea: Antioxidants in green tea are known to clear acne. Try to make a habit of drinking at least one cup a day. You can also use green tea as an external treatment by rubbing a tea bag over the affected area. It sounds weird, but it’s worth a shot.

Pumpkin Seeds: Fall is approaching! Fortunately, this means pumpkins will be everywhere. The seeds contain zinc and fatty acids. You can sprinkle pumpkin seeds on your salad or even eat them by themselves.

Here are some foods you’ll want to avoid in order to achieve clearer skin:

Excess Sugar: It’s okay to indulge yourself in a good dessert every once in a while, but moderation is key. A little bit of dark chocolate is actually good for one’s skin, so keep that in mind.

Ramen: Foods with high trans fats and preservatives can obviously cause acne. As a college student, sometimes it’s hard to have a truly nutritious meal. However, having a salty bowl of Ramen for breakfast, lunch, and dinner is not recommended.
