8 Things You’ll Only Understand if You’re Biracial

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

Let’s be honest. Growing up is confusing enough without the added complications that come from being mixed race. In today’s society, being mixed can lead to some pretty awkward and sometimes offensive situations. So, without further ado, here are eight things you’ll only understand if you’re biracial.

1.  People asking, “Is that your real mom?”

2. Often followed by, “Wait, so are you adopted?”

3. People say things to you like, “I want to have mixed kids, they’re so pretty.”

4. People always assume you are any ethnicity besides what you actually are.

5. And when they can’t figure it out they ask, “What are you?”

6. You get other questions like, “Do you get darker when you tan?”

7. People think it’s ok to just come up and touch your hair.

8. The internal identity crisis every time you have to check your race on a survey.

Obviously, being mixed is a confusing way to grow up, but it’s also a really awesome way to grow up. So, go out there, and keep spreading that mixed girl magic.
