5 Tips for How to Dress for “Spring” in Pittsburgh

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty much done with winter! Yes, this winter in Pittsburgh has been very mild (I’ve only had to pull out my Bean boots and lots of layers a few times). However, even though it’s technically spring, Pittsburgh still has yet to make up its mind about the temperature, so I’ve decided to compile some suggestions based on trends from New York Fashion Week Spring 2017.

Stripes and Oxford Shirt Dresses

Two of the biggest trends on the runway this year were stripes and Oxford shirts reinvented in new ways. This trend is great because it allows you to look professional while still being comfortable and casual. An essential layering tool for any chic college student is a bomber jacket. It’s a great way to stay warm in the mornings when it’s 20 degrees and then show off your dress in the afternoon when it’s 60 degrees.

Using Blue in New Ways

Another big trend of NYFW was the color blue. This is a great option for all of you ladies who love black as a statement color but want something a little different! A great layering trick is to wear a long sweater peeking out from under a military style coat. Personally, I love my pea coat, and I have trouble letting it go every spring, so this is a way to use it just a little longer. The black heels in the bottom outfit could definitely be substituted with some black booties or even slip-on shoes.

Soft and Cozy Ruffles

One look that I have always wanted to pull off is a gauzy, long skirt. Ruffles were a huge trend on the runway this year, and they are definitely the epitome of spring! I love how this look combines a sweater with the skirt to help with the transition into spring. Plus, this is a really updated way to bring the white out trend into March. And, the bottom photo could have definitely been taken at Phipps! #H2P

Better Ways to Wear Khaki than Uniform Pants

For me, whenever I picture khaki I imagine my unflattering pants from my summer jobs. But, one of the big trends on the runway this year was khaki in reimagined ways. Also, another classic transition piece is a khaki trench coat! This is a great way to stay warm with the Pittsburgh winds while still looking elegant.

Using Neon for More than Raves

Okay personally, I have never thought that I could incorporate neon into an everyday look. But, one of the best ways to update your wardrobe from winter to spring is by adding bright pops of color, so why not go all the way to neon! This outfit is great because it’s pretty standard and casual but the heels really elevate it and make it special. I also love the neon accents in her scarf because that is an even more gentle way to both stay warm and add just a tad of neon to your outfit.

So, stay warm and stylish for the last few weeks of this winter/spring mash-up, ladies!
