20 Must See Break-Up Movies

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

During your twenties, you change and grow as a person. Sometimes this means breaking up with someone you care about because you have grown apart.  Take the advice of Mrs. Russo from Wizards of Waverly Place “Listen. You’re going to fall in love so many times before you find the one you’ll be with forever. So think of it this way; you’re one heartbreak closer to happily ever after.” She is right and you will be okay, and every day will be just a little bit better than the last. We have all seen those movies were the girl gets her heart broken and she sits on her bed crying and watching a chick flick. Most of us have been there too, just wishing we were the one being chased down the bridge by Matthew McConaughey, or kissing Ryan Gosling in the rain. We can only dream of that happening, or just watch the films and pretend it’s us. I have compiled a list of movies that will help you get over that post-breakup hump, whether they be rom-coms, dramas, or just comedy, these films will help you during the worst part of your twenties!

1. Mean Girls

We all know Mean Girls is a must for any movie list, except for a list of the worst movies to ever watch. I have some movies for that, but that’s a list for another day …

2. A Walk to Remember

Want to talk about loving someone in sickness and health, until death do us part? This is the movie for you! If you don’t cry by the end of this movie you probably hate puppies too.

3. Twilight

Let your inner teen out and squeal about the love triangle of Edward, Bella, and Jacob! No matter how old we are we could all use a healthy (or unhealthy) dose of Twilight.

4. Love and Other Drugs

In this movie you get to see Jake Gyllenhaal’s butt. Need I say more?

5. Dirty Dancing

Jess from New Girl was on to something, having this as her break up movie. Que singing I’ve Had the Time of my Liiiife for the next few weeks…

6. The Notebook

You have to break out this go to tear jerker post break up!

7. Pitch Perfect

Get some of your favorite pitches together and make a girls night of this movie. If you don’t want to join an acapella group at the end…well, you are doing something wrong.

8. The Princess Bride

It’s inconceivable that anybody would not enjoy this movie because it is a classic, Right Inigo Montoya? I would suggest not killing his father, but I do suggest watching this film. To be clear, do not kill his father, but do watch this movie. Father no, movie yes.

9. A Cinderella Story

This movie reminds of a simpler time, when we had a crush on the hottest guy in school, but we all know the difference is we don’t look like a model so we will sit there watching this movie crying and eating a pizza.

10. Legally Blonde

This is the movie to watch when you are done crying your eyes out and eating ice cream. This is the movie to watch when you realize crappy guys stink, and you are so much more successful than they will be! Elle Woods is a genius in this movie from the beginning to the end. And it just proves, sometimes you find what you need while you’re looking for what you want.

11. This Means War

A movie were two super-hot guys (one with a British accent and the other being Chris Pine) fight to see who gets the girl? Count me in!

12. No Strings Attached

You know what they say… some of the best relationships are built off friendship. What’s the difference if you have sex a few times beforehand? This is one some of us could relate to… If we’re lucky.

13. 50 First Dates

I’ve got 50 reasons for you to watch this movie, but I’ll let you figure them out for yourself.

14. Easy A

If you need a good laugh, then this is the movie for you! Laugh along with a socially awkward 18 year old girl, who gets the boy next door .You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll throw popcorn at the screen, ok maybe that last one is just me…

15. Titanic

If you haven’t seen this movie you might be Patrick Star, because you obviously live under a rock. For those of you that have seen it… we both know there was room for two!

16. She’s the Man

Maybe pretending to be a guy isn’t a practical way to get someone to fall in love with you, but this is still a great movie. Enjoy watching it with some friends, or your cat… I prefer the company of my cat.

17. Dear John

If your heart was broken by a military man, this film might not be for you. However, like any other Nicholas Sparks movie, there is still a great love story here! Plus, Channing Tatum.

18. Just Like Heaven

This movie will make you laugh, it’ll make you cry. It will also make you wonder about your South Oakland apartment, or your dorm room.

19. Crazy Stupid Love

This is my favorite movie of all time! It has everything, from old lovers finding their way back to each other, to high school love, to new love (with a side of shirtless Ryan Gosling). My personal opinion is that he needs to wear more suits and less shirts.

20. The Last Song

This is a great movie to make you happy and sad cry.  Plus, your new dream might be to move to the south and find yourself a nice country boy. Liam Hemsworth’s country boy act will make you say “ex-boyfriend that broke my heart who?”
