How to Make your Space Look Girly

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Jefferson chapter.

As we are coming up on the end of the semester, it is easy to lose focus and become unmotivated. We are tired, and just ready for the school year to be over. One of the things that can make or break homework time is the space you do it in. Being surrounded by things that you love can lift your mood and keep your creative juices flowing. For me, I love pink and all things feminine, so naturally I try to have as much glitter and pastel colors around me at all times. This is definitely not everyone’s cup of tea, but to those who are interested in embracing your girly side, keep reading.

  1. The first step in making any room cozier is to add a big fluffy carpet. Pink is preferred for the ultimate feminine decor, but any light color will do. This is probably the only expensive décor item in my room, and it has lasted me 3 years. If you’re on the typical college budget like myself, I highly recommend searching online for a carpet rather than going to a home décor store, as they can get very pricey.

  2. The next thing is bedding. The comforter I got is an off-white color with pink and white striped bows from Lauren Conrad’s line at Kohls. I placed a fuzzy pink and white polka-dot blanket over top for an extra feminine touch.

  1. A lot of the décor in my room are things that I made myself. As a college student, I can’t afford to go on a huge shopping spree at Pier 1 or Target, so I took to Pinterest to find creative ways to customize my room. In the first picture, I have woven wall hangings above my bed all inspired by Disney Princesses (From left to right: Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella). The floral letter was as simple as gluing fake flowers onto a wooden letter that I got at the craft store. The banner above was also an easy DIY. For this, I bought a small book of glittered scrapbook paper, cut out triangles and taped them to a strand of twine.

  1. Usually, if something comes in pink, I buy it in pink. All of my desk accessories are a light shade of pink with the exception of my lamp. The cup holding my pens/scissors was $3 at the Target dollar spot, the 2-drawer organizer is from Amazon and the little pink box in between was the box my phone came in. I painted it to match and now it holds all of my eye glitter.

  1. Another way to make your room super girly is to decorate your shelves. The sassy cross-stitch in the middle is one that I made from a pattern I found on Pinterest. If you’re not really into DIY, or just simply don’t have the time, knick-knacks are a great substitute. Thrift stores and flea markets are a great source for antique feminine figurines at a low price. I got the carousel at a yard sale last summer for $3 and it has quickly become my favorite item in the room.

  1. Not all of our time is spent in our rooms. So, take your feminine style with you to class with super girly school supplies. Pink folders, notebooks and planners will motivate you to take notes and stay organized throughout the year.

Hopefully now you have the information needed to step up your feminine game without breaking the bank. Any aesthetic, not just the girly girl, can be achieved at a low price. All you have to do is get a little crafty and scout out your local thrift stores for items that fit your style. Before you know it, you’ll be be surrounded by your favorite things that will help you stay focused in these last weeks before summer!
