Ways to Make the Most of Spring Break at Home

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pepperdine chapter.

With Spring break coming up you start to hear about other students’ plans including Hawaii, and Cabo, and the Bahamas, but you also hear about people who are going home, and sometimes they sound down about it. They think that they’re not going to have a spring break worthy of sharing, but that’s not the case. Just because you’re going home doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your time there.

1. Visit a Local Museum

Even if you went there a million times as a kid, you see things differently than when you were in elementary school. Go see if and how you connect with the art, use those deep thinking abilities you didn’t possess way back then.

2. Go to a Local Event (i.e restaurant crawl, farmers market, etc.)

Don’t just stay cooped up, binging Netflix and mooching off your parents’ food. Go experience what you took for granted when you lived at home full time. You’d be surprised at the new experience just outside your door.

3. Explore Nature Spots

If you’re wanting to get in on the spring break Insta game, grab your preferred photo taking device, but if you use your phone don’t get distracted. Go out into nature and just breathe in the fresh air. Who knows for how much longer we’ll have it? Try a new activity whether that be kayaking or hiking… Hell, give bird watching a go. Find something new that’s just in your hometown.

4. Find Something New That’s Just in Your Hometown

It can be as simple as saying goodbye to Starbucks and getting your caffeine from a local coffeehouse (Yes! Even big cities have these, go crazy be as hipster as you want!). Look into the history of your home. There is something you don’t know about it, believe me.

5. Take the Time to Relax and Think

It happens every break where I’ll say the whole week leading up to it that all I’m going to do is relax, and then I never relax! I’m constantly going, thinking ahead, planning what’s going to happen once break is over. College is hectic, and we should cherish any reprieve from the constant hustle and tests. When was the last time you read a book for fun? Pick up the book you’ve been looking at for weeks! Don’t think about midterms and upcoming finals, just breathe. Be in the moment and give yourself a break.

This is my senior year of college and I'm a Public Relations major with a Creative Writing outside concentration. I was born and raised in So-Cal and love it so much I couldn't go too far. As much as South California is my home, I adore traveling and learning about other cultures. A Disney fan to the core you can find me watching any of their movies, or breaking my bank account at Disneyland, and if not I'll probably be reading, writing, or enjoying the Malibu climate.
