Subscription Boxes: The Key to Finding Gifts This Holiday Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pepperdine chapter.

Now that Halloween has come and gone, we can finally start talking about Christmas. But please, no Mariah Carey until after Thanksgiving. One thing you always need to start on early is gift giving, or better yet, planning your gift giving and figuring out who you’re getting presents for and what you’re getting for them.

In college you face a couple barriers on this front. 1. You’re poor as hell. This is very normal and usually pretty obvious from your stock pile of ramen. 2. You make a lot of friends in college, and you might want to give them all a present, but be real. You can’t. And 3. You have to find the time between class, essays, studying for finals, procrastinating, and sleep to figure out what you want to get for everyone.

My recommendation to overcome these minor issues: subscription boxes. There are subscription boxes for everything, and I can almost guarantee that you will find a subscription box for something your friends like; beauty, books, food, socks, etc. So here’s what you might want to do…

  1. Make a list of everyone you want to get a present for.
  2. Put those special people into groups based on their interest and likes.
  3. Find subscription boxes for those interests

The really great thing about subscription boxes is that a lot of them have first timer deals and are pretty affordable, the lowest being around $10. You’ll end up with two kinds of subscription boxes: full size products and samples. Both will work for you.

In sample boxes, usually falling under the beauty category, you receive a number of sample size products (just an FYI, these “sample” sizes will last you a good while). This is helpful because if you only have a few friends interested in this, you can give them a couple of the products in a holiday goodie. Or, now this can be the fun part, you can test out the products yourself and figure out which ones your friends will like and then buy them the products.

Full size products that come in boxes can be a little bit harder to make the most of. If the products that arrive fit a friend or friends perfectly, then bravo, you can give it away and buy more. If not, then you can keep the goodies for yourself, but then all you know is what you don’t want to get your friends.

For the purpose of figuring out gifts for multiple people, I recommend sample boxes. If you have a really good idea of what kinds of products you want to get, go for the full size. Either way, it’s the thought that counts, and I’m sure anyone you give a gift to this holiday season will appreciate it.

And don’t worry if you reading this halfway through the month. Most companies will still send out the month’s box far past the initial send out date, which is usually within the first two weeks of the month so you can even order one the night of November 31st.

This is my senior year of college and I'm a Public Relations major with a Creative Writing outside concentration. I was born and raised in So-Cal and love it so much I couldn't go too far. As much as South California is my home, I adore traveling and learning about other cultures. A Disney fan to the core you can find me watching any of their movies, or breaking my bank account at Disneyland, and if not I'll probably be reading, writing, or enjoying the Malibu climate.
