Initial Thoughts on Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them (The Script)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at PS Berks chapter.

I am on page 68/ 280. I’m not that far into it, but here are some initial thoughts.

-I want a pet Niffler

It’s not a spoiler that Newt Scamander has to do with magical creatures. One of the creatures that we have met so far is a Niffler. Niffler’s are in Harry Potter but I always pictured them as moving elephant trunks. In Fantastic Beasts they are described as a “mole and duck-billed platypus” (pg. 14). I think it sounds cute!

For those muggles/ no maj’s, a Niffler loves shiny things and will steal them.

-JK Rowling definitely wrote this

It’s something about the directions that make it hers. “Jacob, downcast, exists Binley’s office. His bulging pocket vibrates. Alarmed, he pulls out the egg and looks around.” (pg. 23).

It’s just her style of writing! I don’t know how to entirely explain it, but it’s lovely. It’s just how she arranges the words.

Something I’m not fond of:

Characters

-I like the characters that I have met so far. But I don’t think scripts are going to be JK’s best medium. I notice this in her adult novels too. There gets to be too many characters and not enough space to introduce them and cement them in your head and it gets really confusing. So far, that’s the only think I’m not liking. I expected it though. I also wish this was a novel, but you can’t have everything.

Note: I sometimes get afraid to read the newest Harry Potter/ magical story by JK Rowling because I’m afraid that this is going to be the final story. I know Fantastic Beasts is going to be five movies so I think I should be okay with books/scripts for a little while longer.
