Book Review: The Summer I Turned Pretty

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at PS Berks chapter.

From Barnes and Noble:

Some summers are just destined to be pretty

Belly measures her life in summers. Everything good, everything magical happens between the months of June and August. Winters are simply a time to count the weeks until the next summer, a place away from the beach house, away from Susannah, and most importantly, away from Jeremiah and Conrad. They are the boys that Belly has known since her very first summer — they have been her brother figures, her crushes, and everything in between. But one summer, one wonderful and terrible summer, the more everything changes, the more it all ends up just the way it should have been all along.

Rating: 5/5 stars

What it’s like: We Were Liars because of the characters.

What I thought?: First of all, I love the beach. This book was set at the beach and it had a beachy vibe to it, so that’s what gave it a 5/5. I preferred the secondary characters to the main characters. Belly, the narrator, is very relatable. The book always told in her point of view, but some chapters are from when she was younger. I never felt that those chapters were out of place at all because it gave us background by showing and not telling. I loved the moms in this book. I don’t know what exactly it is about them, but they’re fun to watch/hear about/read about. This book is a trilogy and I want to get the next book as soon as I finish the stack that I’m reading and I also want to read all of Jenny Han’s other books as well. I don’t generally cry at books, but the ending of it did get to me so I’m half afraid to read the next book because what I’m afraid of might happen.
