The Rules of Hygge

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oxford Emory chapter.

Hygge is all about feeling satisfied, relaxed, and refreshed. The Danish are among the happiest people in the world, so take a note from them to live a happier and more fulfilling life!

  1. Create a Sanctuary at Home

Home is where your anxieties and worries should be laid to rest. Make your home a sacred place to recharge, refresh, and relax. You can do this with actions (hugs) or by choices in decor (candles, chunky blankets, twinkle lights). No matter what, make it a place where you feel most comfortable and (you guessed it) at home.

2.               Make a Cup of Something HOT

Whether you’re Team Tea, Team Coffee, or Team Cocoa, make yourself a steaming mug full of it and enjoy the warmth while curled up on the couch.

3.               Be present.

Forget about that project you’re working on, forget about the appointments you have, and give yourself time to stop stressing. Home is where you go to get away from those things, so leave them outside. Be present and enjoy the little things with friends, family, pets, and whoever else you cherish most.

4.               Wear something cozy

Fuzzy socks, oversized sweaters, leggings, blanket scarves, bralettes – you name it! Take the time to change into something that makes you feel refreshed and relaxed.

5.               Don’t argue.

Hygge is about discovering peace and calm. Don’t start an argument at home because it will destroy the peacefulness of your sanctuary.

6.               Forget the rules.

At the end of the day, you are the only person who can decide how to bring Hygge into your life. Whatever makes you smile, whatever makes you warm and fuzzy inside, and anything that makes you forget about a rough day is exactly what you should be focusing on at home, but those are different for everyone. Bring the joy home and hang your worries at the door because life’s too short to forget about the things and the people you love.

Oxford Emory '18

As a Political Science Major and a French Minor, I have big dreams of making a positive difference in the world. In 2017, I had the incredible honor of being named Co-Campus Correspondent of Her Campus at the Oxford College of Emory University alongside Marine Bruno. Although I graduated from Oxford College, I will always have fond memories of my time with Her Campus. Even as I move on to a new phase in my life, I look forward to watching Her Campus at Oxford Emory grow!
