N.Y.C. Fashion Week: Fit or Fail?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oswego chapter.

For those of you who don’t know, New York Fashion Week takes place in February and September of each year and is the chance for designers to show off their collections to international audiences and hopefully, potential buyers.

Broke college kids like us will probably never be able to afford a Diane von Furtsenberg wrap dress or a couture Chanel ball gown. However, we can still put in our two cents on this season’s best and worst collections.

Channel your inner Miranda Priestly and put on your most Anna Wintour-like black shades as we track the Spring 2015 collections’ “Fits and Fails.”

Desigual had a sense of humor when they displayed their spring collection. Instead of having stoic models walk the runway, they encouraged their models to smile and even hold cheeky speech bubbles. The collection is full of fun, vibrant color, pattern, and the dress above is an example of their vibrant, Latin American inspired collection. I would definitely feel confident looking for a boyfriend in that cute paisley dress!

If you live in Oswego, you definitely need a good coat to get you through the winter. Dennis Basso must have forgotten how horrible the cold chill in winter can be because he left a lot of air in between those squares of fur (or maybe he was going to make two separate coats, was halfway through making both and decided to smush them together in a dusky brown, shapeless mess).

OK, I don’t even have a place to wear a ballgown but if I did, you better believe I would be shelling out the dough for this Neem Kahn gown, or at the very least, perusing the universe for a decent knock off! It looks like a gown for a fairy princess who spends her days frolicking through the meadows and singing with the birds. Can you imagine twirling in this dress? Do it. It’s awesome.

FAIL

Did Reem Acra run out of fabric for this dress? Because that’s the only excuse I can think of for sending this dress down the runway. Is it even a dress? Or is this a bikini with a skirt? The fact that I can’t even tell what it’s supposed to be says something. If I ever went out in this thing, I would constantly be terrified of my boobs popping out of those very, very flimsy triangles every time I took a step. I don’t know how this model did it!

I am personally a huge Mad Men fan so when I saw this dress, I gasped and thought, “That’s totally something a modern day Betty Draper would wear!” I’m not getting invited to any fancy dinners with my charismatic ad. exec. husband any time soon but if I did, you better believe I would show up in something like this icy silver cocktail dress and my brightest red lipstick.

This dress is mesmerizing, but for all the wrong reasons. I feel like I am looking at a Rorschach blot test on a dress, which isn’t as cool as it sounds. Look! There’s a face! There’s a goat! That’s a bird! That is one ugly dress! I think this dress would get more appreciation in a psychologist’s office than on the street.

Pattern mixing is notoriously tricky, but Nicole Miller got it right with this killer top and pants combo. I find myself getting hypnotized by the black and white wavy striped top but not so much that I ignore those flattering abstract floral pants. This outfit is eye catching and so much different from any of the other separates on the runway. I’m definitely going to be scouring the racks for similar substitutes. This is a look that is off the beaten trail and I want to take that path.

FAIL

Most of Christian Siriano’s collection was beautiful and well made so this blue lace outfit was a real needle scratch. What is up with that wonky lace cape? Maybe the model should have worn it backward so no one would have to see the drop crotch pants and the oversized peplum top. I don’t even want to think about how the back looks! Maybe the cape is hiding something much worse. Let’s not find out.

Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous coat! I never knew that printed coats were a thing! All my life I have been wasting my money on boring, solid colored pea coats when there are beautiful coats with striking prints like this one. Black and white is always a solid color combination but it’s the tree print that makes this coat for me. This coat makes me want winter to start already!

I have seen better outfits from girls who rolled out of bed for a 3 a.m. fire drill. Everything here looks like shapeless pajamas–the bottle green coat looks like a bathrobe, the periwinkle satin dress looks like a nightgown. And we’re supposed to want to wear this on the street? Fashion truly is confusing sometimes.
