New York Fashion Week, Street Style Takes Stage

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oswego chapter.

This past New York Fashion Week did not disappoint. With Kanye West showcasing another line, Riccardo Tisci bringing Givenchy’s line to New York and the abundant street style, there is no way this could have been a dull week of fashion. Kanye West obviously causes a lot of controversy, but his line did not show the eccentric Kanye we all know his personality to be.

Much like the way Kanye dresses, he created a minimalistic aesthetic with simple color palettes and oversized clothing. These outfits seem like something Rihanna or maybe even rapper, Travis Scott, would wear. The line also appeals to young teenagers (especially college students who appreciate clothing that’s a little too big for them).

The military look was definitely an inspiration for Kanye’s collection, with camouflage, army green, and bullet proof vests as the main theme. This wasn’t such a big change from Kanye’s last collection for New York Fashion Week, where he had the same minimalistic and oversized clothing approach. Kanye is starting to get more comfortable in the fashion industry and is demonstrating his understated persona in his clothes.

Riccardo Tisci is someone who has gotten comfortable in the uber successful Givenchy label, which he has been associated with for 10 years. This milestone was celebrated by New Yorkers who got to finally witness the Givenchy collection in the city that never sleeps instead of in “la ville lumière,” in Paris.

Tisci’s Spring 2016 collection with Givenchy was a throwback to previous collections he has done for the house. From origami-shaped gowns to pant suits with frilly feathers, he paid homage to his beginnings with the label. This picture shows one of the haute couture fall 2009 outfits compared to one of the spring 2016 ready-to-wear outfits. There is still that element of Asian influence with the origami-shaped top and the relaxed trousers. Even though Tisci didn’t show much of a change in style in his collection, he elevated the style of his showcased collection in New York City.

Now to the real stars of New York Fashion Week; the people showcasing steet style. There is always a sense of a laid-back attitude in street style, which is a very refreshing take on fashion.

These ladies prove that you don’t need to wear heels even when going to a fashion show. It’s about comfort for these ladies and what they feel confident in. Each of these ladies have their own style and in a city like New York, that can only be celebrated.
