A Memoriam For The Actors/Actresses Known As “That Guy/Gal”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oswego chapter.

Do you ever see those actors in TV or movies that pop up in literally everything, but you still have no idea who they are? They’re the ones that have you scrolling through IMDB, trying to jog your memory on why you know their face. Were they in front of you in line at Domino’s last week or starring in Jurassic World? Who knows! But we broke it down for you, so next time you find yourself sitting next to your favorite “that guy” at lunch, you can snag a selfie instead of spending the next hour wondering if that was someone you vaguely knew and should’ve said hi to. So without further adieu, I present to you… “these guys”!

1. Judy Greer – She’s the queen of “that actress whose name you don’t know.” Judy has over 100 movie and television credits, both mainstream and lesser known. You may have seen her more recent appearances in Jurassic World, Ant-Man, or the classic film 13 Going on 30. And let’s never forget, she gave us the outrageous Kitty from Arrested Development. What’s even better is she has her own book titled I Don’t Know Where You Know Me From. If that isn’t more perfect, I don’t know what is. You keep doing you, Judy!

2. David Koechner – While he lives in many of our hearts as the egregious Packer from The Office, let’s not forget that he’s been making us laugh since our childhood. You may remember him from the small show, Hannah Montana. No? Then you’ve definitely caught him on the big screen in hits like Anchorman and Talladega Nights! He’s so good at playing that guy your parents can’t figure out why you hang out with.

3. Kathryn Hahn – It is a crime that Kathryn Hahn isn’t a household name by now, but for some reason, she’s made it onto the list! Hopefully after her breakout role in Bad Moms this past summer, we’ll be hearing a lot more about her. But until People Magazine starts delivering, you can re-watch some of her most hilarious moments in We’re the Millers, The Visit, and of course, Parks and Recreation. “Cahn” we get more “Hahn”?

4. Craig T. Nelson – I know what you’re thinking: “Isn’t that the dad from Juno?” Nope! Craig’s been delivering us some crazy acting skills in big hits like Get Hard and the television series Parenthood (I’m not crying, you’re crying). Unfortunately, his name has just not stuck. And now I bet you’re thinking, “Oh yeah, I love that guy!” Give him some more love and check him out in The Proposal, Poltergeist, or my all-time favorite, Blades of Glory.

5. Wendi McLendon-Covey – This woman slays in every comedy she appears in and we should acknowledge it! Remember when she handled being puked on like a complete champ in Bridesmaids? She’s the ultimate friend you wish you had. You can catch her in some throwbacks like Reno 911, What to Expect When You’re Expecting or on the ABC sitcom, The Goldbergs. If you have the choice between Wendi and homework, always choose Wendi!

6. Kevin Corrigan – I love Kevin Corrigan. He’s like the underrated version of Vince Vaughn. Now I’m hoping you have the mental image of Vince Vaughn on the set of Fred Claus with Kevin waiting as his understudy, praying Vaughn will break his leg so he can come in and be the star of the film. Kevin has been in almost 150 movies and television shows including Superbad, Grounded For Life, Goodfellas and Pineapple Express.

7. Carla Gallo – We all have a period horror story in our arsenal, but few as cringe worthy as getting period blood on the guy you’re grinding with at a party. Carla gave us that in the generational classic, Superbad. This woman has done everything; from intense hit shows like Madmen to melting out hearts on Bones, and then in her most latest role in Neighbors and Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising.

8. Sean Gunn – He’s Kirk and always will be, but sometimes actors need to branch outside of their comfort zones (in Sean’s case we’re talking Gilmore Girls). That’s exactly what Kirk – er, Sean – did. What can I say? The man keeps busy. When he’s not helping out his director bro, causing some ruckus in space and filling in for Bradley Cooper in Guardians of the Galaxy, you can catch him making appearances in shows like Bunheads and Bones. Anything to hold you over as you wait for the Gilmore Girls revival in November, right?

9. Annie Mumolo – Not only does this woman dominate on screen, she’s pretty good with a pen too! This double threat helped write the blockbuster Bridesmaids with Kristen Wiig, where she played “nervous woman on the plane” a little too realistically. She’d totally have you getting drunk on a plane and telling everyone there’s a colonial woman on the wing too! If you missed that one though, you may also recognize Annie from Bad Moms, The Boss, and This is 40.

10. Robert Clendenin – Saved the best for last! Clendenin takes “That Guy” to a whole new level. When you google search his name, more things about Robert Downey Jr. show up than he does! Don’t get me wrong, I like looking at pics of Robert Downey Jr. as much as the next girl, but we cannot ignore the hilarity Bob has brought us on our favorite sitcoms, like Cougar Town, Scrubs, That 70’s Show, and Ugly Betty.

I am a Public Relations student at SUNY Oswego! I love writing, comedy, music, and a good dog sighting. I'm obsessed with Instagram and a self proclaimed "pineapple enthusiast." Special Note: I will work for junk food.
