Health and Fitness: Staying Fit Despite the Cold

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oswego chapter.

The weather is getting colder and the workload more stressful. When do you have time get the gym and where do you get the motivation? Here are 5 tips to help you get in the gym and stay motivated.

1.)   Plan out one hour in your day, 3-5 days a week, where you can workout. Write it in your agenda so you don’t plan anything during that time. This will put you into a schedule of working out. If you can, keep the times each week.

2.)   Find a workout buddy. If you find someone to workout with, you will feel obligated to wake up an hour early or take a break from work. Also, when you workout out with someone, you can encourage each other to run an extra mile or do one last set on a machine.

3.)   Create a pump up play list for your Ipod. This will get you going on any day, even when you don’t feel like being at the gym. Here are a few great pump up songs:
·        Lose Yourself- Eminem
·        Anything by Paramore
·        Boom- P.O.D
·        Black Betty- Ram Bam
·        Bleed It Out- Linkin Park
·        Stronger- Kanye West

4.)   Watch a movie about sports and the underdog winning. It really gets you motivated and pumped up to be like the athletes in the movie. A few great movies to watch:
·        Miracle
·        Remember the Titans
·        Cinderella Man
·        Million Dollar Baby
·        Friday Night Lights

5.)   Take advantage of the group exercise classes the fitness centers on campus offer. Also, look into signing up for a personal trainer to help you get back on track or stay on track with working out. If you don’t have a membership with the fitness centers on campus, Stability Fitness and Planet Fitness also offer classes and personal trainers.

I am from a small town outside of Syracuse, New York. In high school, I ran Cross Country and track where I competed in the 100m hurdles, 4x1, 200m and many other events. I now attend SUNY Oswego and I am majoring in journalism and anthropology. I have recently added a minor in health science because of my passion for health and fitness. Last semester, I wrote a health and fitness blog for Her Campus Oswego. I currently work as a personal trainer on campus. I love readings, writing, skiing, running, and I am a major shop-aholic! Kaitlin Provost graduated from SUNY Oswego, majoring in journalism with a learning agreement in photography. She grew up in five different towns all over the Northeast, eventually settling and graduating from high school in Hudson, Massachusetts. Kait now lives in the blustery town of Oswego, New York, where she can frequently be found running around like a madwoman, avoiding snow drifts taller than her head (which, incidentally, is not very tall). She has worked for her campus newspaper, The Oswegonian, as the Assistant News Editor, and is also the President of the Oswego chapter of Ed2010, a national organization which helps students break into the magazine industry. She hopes to one day work for National Geographic and travel the world.
