7 Alternatives to Partying This Halloween

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oswego chapter.

If you’re not much of a college partier, then this very well could be the weekend you dread year after year. Everyone is going out, even quiet Beth down the hall, and you’re left sitting around wondering what to do for the night. Hey, we’ve all been there and know the FOMO is real. But that’s okay! Because this year, I’m here to give you some opportunities that will get you out of the dorm, or at least keep you occupied. That way when Monday comes around and everyone’s asking what you did this weekend, you won’t have to say, “I stayed inside all weekend, called my mom and then watched Netflix.” I’m doing this for you and the mom’s everywhere who would rather pretend their child is partying this weekend.

Go to a concert

Check out venues near you to see if any bands are performing this weekend. It’ll take up a good portion of your night and you may discover a cool new band! Plus, a lot of Halloween shows entail costumes, so you still get to dress up if you’re into that!

Stay in and bake

Get some friends, put on a fun playlist, and bake until it seems like you have enough junk food to feed an army. Sure it’s low key, but that doesn’t make it any less fun! If you’re feeling generous, you could even offer your plethora of goodies to your hall mates in the morning. (If it were me though, I’d just eat it all).

Go to the movies

There is nothing more festive than seeing a scary movie on Halloween! A lot of creepy ones come out specifically on Halloween, like Ouija. So succumb yourself to the marketing tactics of the Halloween season, buy a large popcorn and treat yourself.

Visit a haunted house

If you can’t enjoy bloody ghouls and zombies screaming at you in a dilapidated house on Halloween, when can you really? Some houses are even looking for volunteers for their busy weekend. If you have a gnarly costume or killer makeup skills, you should call your closest haunted house and see if they’re looking for any extra hands this weekend. Ironically, the haunted houses will still seem less scary than some of the frat houses.

Experience The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Someone is bound to be playing it near you. So grab a friend or two, ditch your inhibitions and go see what it’s all about. If you’ve never been to one before, trust me, just go with it and have fun!

Volunteer

Believe it or not, volunteer opportunities are out there even on Halloween. Your local senior citizen home may need help throwing a Halloween bash together, libraries are looking for an extra hand, even carnival related tasks are out there just waiting to be scooped up. So, call up some local places and see if anyone is looking for a little help this weekend!

Go out to eat

Make it a fun night! Dress up (in costume, or wear something fancy!), pick somewhere you’ve never gone before, and don’t you dare leave without dessert! Bring your girlfriends or that dude you love who conveniently also doesn’t enjoy going out and make the night something special. Maybe you’ll even make a new annual Halloween tradition out of it!

Hopefully, something on here sounds right for you! But honestly, if staying in, watching Netflix and calling your mom on Halloween is the way you like to spend the night, then ignore the haters and keep doing your thing.
