Zoe’s Style Blog: A Nod to the Best of 2011

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OSU chapter.

I think we all can agree that 2011 was an amazing year for fashion.  From vintage favorites to innovative, fresh pieces, 2011 was full of many revolutionizing trends—and even with beginning of a new year, I don’t think that we’ve seen the last of them!

I think I should start off by listing a trend that not only has been popular for years but also has placed itself into every fashionista’s closet in some form.  It’s animal print.  Animal print has taken over the fashion world.  With several amazing patterns to choose from, they have been seen on shoes, coats, shirts, jeans, purses, jewelry, and even nails.  Animal print always has a place in a fashionista’s heart—and even though it’s 2012 now, I don’t think that will be changing anytime soon.

A-ten-hut!  Who would have thought that soldier’s clothing would influence fashion?  This past year, macho-chic military wear turned masculinity into high fashion.  Fashion icons all over the world have been wearing this fun, rugged look.  Whether worn casually while walking through campus, or for getting dressed up for a Saturday night, I am sure that you will notice this trend this new year as well.

Are your jeans boring?  I think it is time to look on the bright side and start wearing this popular trend of 2011!  Colorful denim is no longer considered risky or too alternative; this bold trend has become quite the natural look.  Wearing your favorite color on your legs truly became a groundbreaking trend this past year!

The legging.  Where can I even begin?  Leggings have slowly changed from tight pants that runners wear, to tight pants that are worn under a skirt or dress, to actual pants.  These amazing comfortable, fashionable “pants” are changing fashion everywhere.  The different varieties of leggings are endless … and I mean endless.  Leggings can range from leather to velvet; their versatility and comfort have helped them go a long way in the fashion world.  The best part?  Because leggings come in every shape and style, I know that there is the perfect pair for every college student out there!

This past year, we were also obsessed with the three F’s (Fur, Feathers and Fringe).  Texture is very important while putting together an outfit, and these three must-haves added the perfect amount of texture to every outfit in 2011.  We saw fur on coats, hats, shoes, and vests, fringe on purses, shirts and shoes and feathers covering a collegiette’s™ body, from your hair, your jewelry, clothing, shoes … wherever!

You definitely know that opposites attract when you see this amazing couple: Lace and Leather.  This fun, edgy/soft look made its way from the runway to your campus, and is probably here to stay in 2012.  This look is not only easy to pull off, but is so cute too!

Nerds truly took over!  The fun and cute nerdy glasses became one very popular accessory in 2011.  Why be embarrassed of being a nerd, right?  It’s time to embrace this great fashion trend; these glasses are worn everywhere!  Whether they are fake or real, this “geek-chic” trend is sure to continue on to 2012!
