Just Released: Time Magazine’s 25 Most Influential Teens of 2014

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OSU chapter.

Just a few days ago, Time Magazine released their “25 Most Influential Teens of 2014” List. The 25 teens that made the list, in order of age, are:

1.     Mo’ne Davis, 13

2.     Sasha Obama, 13, and Malia Obama, 16

3.     Kiernan Shipka, 14

4.     Jazz Jennings, 14

5.     Flynn McGarry, 15

6.     Erik Finman, 15

7.     Nash Grier, 16

8.     Rico Rodriguez, 16

9.     Ciara Judge, 16, Émer Hickey, 17, and Sophie Healy-Thow, 17

10.   Shawn Mendes, 16

11.   Jaden Smith, 16

12.   Becky G, 17

13.   Salma Kakar, 17

14.   Lorde, 17

15.   Lydia Ko, 17

16.   Chloë Grace Moretz, 17

17.   Kylie Jenner, 17, and Kendall Jenner, 18

18.   Malala Yousafzai, 17

19.   Rachel Fox, 18

20.   Bethany Mota, 18

21.   Joshua Wong, 18

22.   Austin Mahone, 18

23.   Tavi Gevinson, 18

24.   Megan Grassell, 19

25.   Troye Sivan, 19

As is evident by the list, Time Magazine chose teens who are changing the world in their own unique ways. From Pakistani youth activist Malala Yousafzai to grand prize winners Ciara Judge, Émer Hickey, & Sophie Healy-Thow at the Google Science Fair, to social media mogul Nash Grier, Time included teens who influence other teens of this generation in a number of different ways.

However, there has been some backlash on certain teens who were included on this list, the most prominent being Kendall and Kylie Jenner. Everyone who is tuned into pop culture has heard of the Kardashians, usually in a negative light. So what has Kendall and Kylie Jenner accomplished that has earned them a set on Time’s most influential list? Time magazine states “Together, the… costars hosted red-carpet events, release clothing and nail polish lines, and even published a dystopian young adult novel…. They’ve also had solo success too – Kendall with modeling… and Kylie with pseudo-enterpreneurship.”

What do you think? Did Time Magazine really capture the 25 most influential teens of the past year? And if they did, who was the most influential of the 25?
