In Defense of Kim Kardashian

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OSU chapter.

The Kardashians have made a name for themselves by airing all of their dirty laundry for the world to see. They have never been shy about showing their skin or drama to the public. Some people call them class and talentless, others think they’re hilarious and great television.

By now everyone has likely seen and read about Kim’s new “break the internet” spread in Paper Magazine. It, like literally everything the Kardashians do, has caused lots of controversy. It has sparked a wave of comments, discussions, and, of course, some imitations, like my personal favorite from Chelsea Handler.

However, what stuck out most among both the support and backlash that accompanied the spread was an Instagram comment from Glee’s Naya Rivera: “I normally don’t. But… you’re someone’s mother…” This comment irked me more than anything else, because, honestly, what does that even mean? Are women supposed to give up their beauty, sexuality and personal freedom simply because they have given birth? Do we want to raise our daughters to look up to women who give up their entire existence for the sake of their family? Whether or not you are a Kim fan, she is certainly beautiful and why is she being criticized for celebrating herself?

I know many people believe it’s wrong to bare that much skin, and, in the Kardashians’ case, that much of their lives, to the public. However, that is a personal decision and should not be based on whether someone has children. In addition, if Kim feels comfortable putting herself out there, who are we to judge?
