Starting Over: Tips For Making The Most Out Of Your MoveBy May 19, 2013 - 3:00am The idea of moving to a town or city where I know absolutely nobody kind of makes me feel green around the gills. I’m a pretty obnoxiously outgoing person, so when I talk about the idea of moving somewhere new for a job, I’m often told, “you’ll have no trouble making new friends!” Yeah, well… somewhere inside this gregarious young woman hides the shy, scared, and self-conscious little girl who wore a baby blue velour sweat suit and ratty tennis shoes almost every day and had one friend until she was halfway through high school. Little do most people know, I am actually pretty scared of the friend-making process. Do they like me? Am I talking too much? I hope they don’t think I’m weird for wearing chevron printed jeans. Do I reek of weirdness?... |

3LAU Closes Willamette Valley Music FestivalBy May 14, 2013 - 4:51pm Justin Blau, better known by his stage name 3LAU, takes to the main stage at the Willamette Valley Music Festival facing a crowd of cheering fans full of anticipation. He's set to close the day-long festival of local talent. It's a warm spring night, energy is high, and smiles stretch across the faces of fans as the first beats begin to drop. The show continues on this same high note, and doesn't dip at any point. 3LAU keeps the energy high the entire show with extreme interaction with his crowd. It's not common to see EDM DJs leave their booths, but 3LAU goes back and forth from stage, to gate, to on top of speakers, all while pumping his arms and singing with the cheering UO students and Eugene community members.... |

From Peru to Oregon: A Bilingual Student's JourneyBy May 14, 2013 - 4:49pm “English is not my first language, no way,” says Lucia Estrada, sophomore and communications major at University of Oregon. Lucia moved with her parents and sister from Lima, Peru to Lake Oswego, Oregon when she was 10 years old, leaving behind her 18 year-old brother at the time; she would not see him again for another eight years. Fortunately, she did not find it hard to make friends. “Other kids were very friendly and they all seemed pretty amused by the fact that I couldn’t speak English,” says Lucia, saying how her friends and her would resort to communication through playing games and drawing pictures. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis Rock Mallard MadnessBy May 9, 2013 - 1:20pm Waves of excitement hit the U of O campus, when students were told that Macklemore & Ryan Lewis would be coming to Mat Knight Arena on May 4th to kick off Mallard Madness, an ASUO sponsored event. Pre-sale tickets were only available to Oregon students, so those of us who were lucky enough to be in the pit acknowledge that this was a one of a kind concert. With 8,000 tickets sold, Matt Knight Arena was filled with students dressed in fur coats, Sharkfacegang t-shirts, and eager smiles awaiting the arrival of one of their favorite artists. As the arena grew dark five men took the stage, a drummer, guitarist, DJ, bass player, and a front man named Sol. READ MORE |

As added encouragement, the weather seems to be consistently sunny as we near summer. Here are three of my favorite places to run on a sunny day. To Autzen Stadium: Starting at the intersection of Franklin Blvd. and Agate St. it’s a 0.8-mile run to Autzen. The path is relatively flat with a few bumps, namely over the footbridge. What I love about this path is the fact that the scenery is constantly changing. When I began training for my first 5k run this was extremely helpful. I was able to concentrate on the different surroundings instead of how tired I was getting.... |

Acts of Kindness After the Boston Marathon BombingsBy April 28, 2013 - 3:00am After hearing about the bombings that took place during the Boston Marathon, I was...well, there are no words for it. I was all at once shocked, frightened, angry, sad, and most of all, disheartened that these bombs killed and wounded innocent civilians--many whom had come to the race after months and years of training. On top of that there were those who had come to offer support to their friends and family at the finish line. READ MORE |
