Name: Abby Johnson

Year: Senior

Hometown: Thousand Oaks, CA

Major(s): Journalism and Cinema Studies

HC:  How would you describe your style?

AJ:  A little bit girly, a little bit artsy, with kind of a hipster flair. Sometimes sporty, if I’m in a sporty mood.

HC:  Do you prefer sporty or girly?

AJ:  If I’m trying to look nice, then I tend to be more on the girly side.  I love dresses.

HC:  How did you develop your sense of style?

AJ:  It’s kind of informed by my upbringing.  I was a little bit more preppy, I think, from growing up in Texas.  And then I moved to California, and I really wanted to dress like the cool surfer kids, and that wasn’t my style either. Then I moved up to Oregon, and I’m not quite a Birkenstocks person, but I’ve kind of found my middle ground with the combination of all those different things.

HC:  What is your favorite store and why?

AJ:  Definitely Nordstrom Rack because you can find literally anything.  You can find really nice jeans or cute Nikes, pretty much everything in between.  That’s probably my most commonly visited store.

HC:  Do you think your field of study affects your style?

AJ:  Yeah, I do actually.  I have this jacket I usually wear when I film because it has a lot of pockets, so it’s easy for me to have extra batteries, or sound gear, throw a recorder in there, or even an extra light bulb in case it goes out, which happened once.  You have to dress accordingly when you’re filming.  If you’re going to be filming outside, layers are awesome, especially in Oregon.  You’re going to be rained on, and then it’s going to be freezing, and then it’s going to be hot, all in the span of a four-hour shoot, so prepare for it all.

HC:  What are some clothing items or accessories that you can’t live without?

AJ:  Definitely my green army jacket.  That’s the one I endearingly call my “filming jacket” because seriously, it’s a lifesaver.  Also my brown combat boots that I bought my sophomore year of high school.  They’re absolutely ragged and there are holes in the bottom, but they’re my favorite shoes, and now they look sort of rustic and vintage.  They are past the point of just looking worn, and now looking like, “oh, they’re like fashion-worn.”  You know, like when you buy things that look vintage.  They’re kind of past the point of “oh, you should probably replace those,” to “now they’re cute again”.

HC:  Is there any trend you wish would disappear entirely?

AJ:  Shorts that are too short. I may be a bit of a grandma here, but you know, I think that a bit of modesty will get you places.  I like short shorts, I’m not saying they’re entirely bad, but when you can see the butt cheeks, I can’t get on board with that.

HC:  Is there any trend that you wish would come back?

AJ: I think skorts.  They’re cute and they’re functional.  I had a ton of them when I was a kid so I could go play on the playground and also look pretty and girly at the same time.  I think adult skorts would be a really cool thing to come back in style because sometimes you have to run errands and want to look pretty.

HC:  Have any celebrities influenced your style?

AJ:  I really like Selena Gomez’s style, especially lately, where I think her people are trying to establish her as an adult artist, and not a kid from Disney Channel anymore.  It’s kind of a sophisticated sexy.  I like that a lot.

HC:  What’s your go-to outfit?

AJ: You can’t go wrong with a pair of skinny jeans, cute boots, and a cardigan.  That’s the easiest way to be comfortable but still look like you tried.  And you can mix it up, you can add a long necklace or a scarf and it’s like a different outfit, but it’s all kind of rooted in the same way, which makes it easy for quick decisions when you accidentally oversleep for class.

HC:  What is your favorite decade for fashion?

AJ: I kind of like the nineties.  They were fun because they were kind of grungy and girly at the same time.  And I still have a few scrunchies, so if those ever make a comeback, let me know!
