Campus Profile: Theresa Nguyen

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oregon chapter.

Name: Theresa Nguyen

Year: Senior

Hometown:  Hillsboro, OR

Major: advertising major, business minor

HC: What are you involved with on campus?

TN: I’m in Sigma Kappa and UO Miracle, working on the Dance Marathon.

HC: Tell me about that, what is it like being in Sigma Kappa?

TN: It’s really fun so far – everyone is super sweet.  I feel like it’s a break in the mold of sorority life, because I saw it from an outside view for the past three years, and now being in one, it’s very different.

HC:  How do you think Sigma Kappa is “breaking the mold”?

TN:  The people we have are just really different.  We’re so diverse that you get a great group of girls who have been here and haven’t been in sororities, and are all new. Since we’re all in the same pledge class, we aren’t separated by class standing or what level you’re at, so everyone helps everyone.  I think it’s so cool.

HC: Why did you get involved with UO Miracle?

TN: Freshman year, my roommates from the dorms said, “Come with us to this philanthropy event!” and I said, “Oh, ok, I guess it sounds fun!”  There are people who man the event, and those are the executive team, so they’re behind the scenes.  But there are also people on the stage that do the dancing and the MC-ing, and I was like, “Oh my gosh, I want to be you,” and I did that for two years.  I switched over to exec this year.

HC: Are you involved with anything off-campus?

TN: Does work count?  I work at Dutch Bros.

HC: What are your career aspirations?

TN: I think right now, I’m in between magazine design and advertising.  I want to work for Vogue so bad, that’s like the dream job.

HC: What is your dream place to live?

TN: San Francisco or New York, for advertising.  I just love those cities.

HC:  Who is your celebrity crush?

TN: Taylor Lautner.  I’ve loved him since Sharkboy and Lavagirl came out.  I used to be in karate and judo, and he was into karate, and he would compete at championships because he was so good.  So I followed him before he was on Sharkboy and Lavagirl because he was so famous in the karate world.

HC: Who is your role model?

TN: I really like Jennifer Lawrence.  I respect that she’s just totally herself.  It doesn’t matter who’s around or who’s watching, she’s just like, “I’m going to do me and that’s good enough for you.” I feel like so often you see people change when they become famous, and she has just kept it so real.

HC: If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

TN: Hash browns.  I really like breakfast food.

HC: What’s your spirit animal?

TN: An elephant.

HC: If you could have any super power, what would it be, and why?

TN:  Invisibility, because I think it would be really fun.  You could sneak into secret areas, or just hide when you don’t feel like talking to people.

HC: Are you currently binge-watching anything on Netflix?

TN: Friends!
