Campus Style Watch: Top 3 Fall/Winter Color and Style Trends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OR State chapter.

This fall, the runways were all about jewel toned pieces, patterned sweaters and accessories, and creative layering with soft neutral colors. Many of these pieces college students already own, but when the weather gets colder and the rain becomes more steady it can be hard to want to dress up for classes, work or whatever else you do on campus. That said, there are some easy ways you can bring the runway into your own style to make our beautiful campus your own personal catwalk!

1. Jewel Tones

In this first look, Jordan Clausen models a maxi skirt in a color very similar to one of Pantone’s most popular colors forecasted for this fall. She wears a chunky black circle scarf, simple boots and a plain white sweater to allow the color of the skirt to truly pop. Balancing neutrals with a jewel tone can be a great way to incorporate the runway into your own personal style and can even be accomplished with a simple purse or headband if you don’t want to go for a big color statement like Jordan did here.

2. Layering with Neutrals

In this look Lia Bee models a cargo jacket in one of Pantone’s color trends of this fall, a pretty Cypress green. She wears a soft pink neutral scarf and a ruffled white dress for a romantic and simple look. To accessorize and help keep warm, she adds some essential black tights and brown zippered boots which every girl should have in her closet to prepare for fall. Using layers and neutral colors you, too, can create a cozy and cute fall look. Use tunics, long shirts, leggings, tights, and layered shirts for some creative and fun looks similar to Lia’s look shown here.

3. Patterned Sweaters and Accessories

In this final look, Riley Nelson wears a draped cardigan sweater with stripes, chevrons and a wide variety of other dotted and striped patterns similar to those seen on the Fall runways of Emilio Pucci, Vera Wang, Polo Ralph Lauren, and Rag & Bone to name a few. To showcase the boldness in the patterns of her sweater she wears simple black leggings, a printed graphic tee and a sturdy and comfortable pair of combat boots. Using Fair Isle print, Christmas prints or argyle patterned sweaters you already own you can easily create a cute and comfy look like Riley’s. The key to this look is offsetting the print and chunkiness of the sweater either with a soft and girly skirt for a date night or semi-formal occasion or by wearing it with simple neutral pants or leggings for walking to classes or staying cozy in the library. Try mixing up your prints with fun textures as well, such as velvet or faux fur, for a cute and wintery look for the approaching holidays.

I hope these looks give you some inspiration for the rest of this fall and winter season and that you can find ways to be both comfy and fashionable! Dressing your best during midterms and finals season can be just one way to make yourself feel a little bit better about your day, so try these looks on for size for that added bonus. Good luck with the rest of your term, and just remember we’re almost to winter break!
