Why You Should Watch HBO’s Westworld

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oneonta chapter.

Westworld is HBO’s newest sci-fi drama series, which premiered on October 2nd. The show is based on the 1973 Michael Crichton movie of the same name. It is the main reason I’ve been looking forward to every Sunday, but I can’t lie – you will get confused. You’ll start coming up with your own theories for the show; some right, most wrong. You will question almost everything. I never really thought about it as a show that you NEEDED to watch until some of the most recent episodes have aired. All the plots strung themselves together and it began to finally make sense; and when it did, it blew my mind. This coming Sunday, December 4th, is the season finale. Here are two reasons out of many I believe you should watch HBO’s Westworld.

The Idea

Westworld is a futuristic theme park based on the Old Wild West. The “hosts” of the park are realistic androids with absolutely no consciousness. These hosts, each with their own back story, have been programmed to award the visiting consumers their every desire. The park can be considered a “pleasure-seeking” place. Those who visit the park are paying around $40,000 a day for their ideal immoral experience. The show intelligently explores and investigates further human fascination and the demanding dependency on technology, while also revealing what some of our darkest desries or impulses may be without having any repercussions. Since it’s HBO, you can be sure to expect a lot of sex, violence, and shockers, probably more than what’s in the original film (if you’ve seen it). Each episode leaves us wondering what the plot will actually be. It’s really just a big mystery, and you will have no idea what direction they’re planning to go next. This show does a great job of keeping the audience on their toes.

The Cast

The show features an array of cast members including Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, James Marsden, Evan Rachel Wood and more. Evan Rachel Wood and James Marsden are involved in lengthy bits of the pilot episode. Evan Rachel Wood portrays her character perfectly, especially with mastering the accent. Central supporting roles are played by Thandie Newton, Rodrigo Santoro, Jimmi Simpson, Ben Barnes and numerous others, that will all develop throughout the season.
