A Thank You Letter to My Best Friend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oneonta chapter.

Dear Best Friend,

Before you became a significant part of my life, I never understood what a true friendship was. You are the most selfless, open-minded, brave, & above all my favorite, craziest person I know. My life & perspective of the world have completely changed for the better. I honestly can’t imagine where I’d be without you.

The funny thing is, you came in at a great time in my life & I couldn’t have expected a better friend. So, that’s why I thought it was time for me to write this letter to tell you, & everyone, how thankful I am for you!

1. Thank you for pushing me to be my best.

You have always been someone I’ve looked up to. The saying is very true that “you are who you surround yourself with” & I’m so lucky to be a part of your life. You’ve motivated me to push myself & never settle for less than I deserve. Without you I wouldn’t be who & where I am today.

2. Thank you for never judging me.

Whatever it is, I can always tell you. It’s just that simple. The best part is that even if it’s good or bad, we normally end up laughing & joking about it.

3. Thank you for being as much of a foodie as me.

There’s no other person out there that gets my relationship with food more than you do. I’ll never forget all the times we went to Healthy Living Cafe & would take turns paying for each other. Each time we went our plates slowly became heavier & heavier on the scale at check out. But, hey #youreonlyyoungonce!

4. Thank you for being my workout buddy since day one.

It all started junior year of high school, & look how far we’ve come! All those laps we ran around the school, & staying after just so we could do squats in the fitness center really have led us to our path today. Although we didn’t have a clue what we were doing at first & joked around half the time, we eventually figured it out together & found a love for fitness.

5. Thank you for always making me laugh.

No one makes me laugh quite like you. Even though my parents would like it if we calmed down, & were a little quieter when you sleepover, we both know that’s never going to happen. I hope it never does.

6. Thank you for being my rock.

Currently, life is hard for both of us, but there’s no one better that I’d want to persevere with! You have kept me together all these years, through the good & the bad, & you’re doing a great job currently.

7. Thank you for always supporting me.

I’m really indecisive. Whether I want to be a nurse one day & then a communications major the next, you’re there to back me up & sometimes even put me in my place. Sometimes I think you know I’ll probably end up changing my mind, but you go with it because you know it makes me happy to think I have things figured out.

8. Thank you for all your wise advice.

Somehow you know exactly what to say. No matter what the subject is, after a talk, text, or phone call, I’m left with some great words of wisdom. I have always said that you’re an old soul in that way, & its something I’m forever grateful to be able to learn from.

9. Thank you for going vegan with me.

Never in a million years did I think I’d be vegetarian, let alone vegan. But we did it somehow & I wouldn’t change a thing. Being the only vegans in our small school was tough & often felt like we were coming out, but we literally do everything together whether its on purpose or not. Your love for animals, either big or small, is an inspiration. I’m lucky to have even gained a fraction of your kind heart.

10. Thank you for being the best “YES” friend of all time.

I love how when I ask if you want to do something you (usually) say “YES!”. A lot of the times we get so pumped to do something, & then afterwards wonder why we thought it was such a good idea. Yet, I’m still happy to have experienced all these crazy things with you. If it wasn’t for you saying yes to most of my bad ideas, we wouldn’t have so many great memories & adventures. Plus, you never know the great things saying “yes” could lead to.

11. Thank you for putting up with my subtle OCD.

You know this & I know this, I can be a little anal about things. Whether its my room or getting somewhere as soon as possible, you know exactly how to mess up my plans. Without your constant clothes all over my floor when you sleep over, or the long talks we have at your house even though we’re already running late, I wouldn’t have learned to chill out. I’m still working on it , but now that pile of clothes on my floor is something I look forward to.

12. Thank you for being YOU.

Honestly, you’re the best person I know. You’ve become one of my greatest role models & inspirations. You’re a blessing to my life & always light up my day. I can’t wait to see how far you’ll go & I hope to be there with you every step of the way.

All in all, we’ve been through everything together & I wouldn’t change a single thing. There are so many things that I’m thankful for that you do that would make this a novel. I seriously don’t know what I’d do without you in my life. Since we became close, it has always been clear that you’ll be my forever friend. I can’t wait until the day we’re in Paris, drinking wine, & looking back on all the amazing memories we’ve shared together. Thank you for being my best friend.
