This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oneonta chapter.

As we all know, the month of October is breast cancer awareness month. Below are a few facts to get you more informed, as well as motivating you to donate to a good cause! There are plenty of events being held on campus that allow students to donate.

1. About 1 in 8 women in the United States will develop breast cancer over the course of her life.

2. In 2016 alone, between invasive, and non-invasive (whether it is spreading or not spreading) there are close to 300,000 cases of breast cancer.

3. Men can also develop breast cancer, but the odds are 1 in 1,000 compared to 1 in 8 for women.

4. Breast cancer is the most common diagnosed cancer in women alongside skin cancer.

5. If a first degree relative such as a sister or mother had breast cancer, the chances of you developing it are twice as high.

6. Most early symptoms are hard to detect at first so here are a few: Swelling, any lumps or stiffness of the breast, and pain.
