5 Guilt-Free Snack Ideas

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oneonta chapter.

As much as we’re told that snacking is an unhealthy habit in our lives, it’s not a bad thing that you should feel ashamed for. What becomes the problem is the kind of snacks that you grab throughout the day. Healthy snacking is really beneficial when trying to get through your busy and productive day, because it helps you from overeating at your meal times. If you want to snack smart, there is some planning you’ll have to do so that you’re not tempted to run to a close vending machine. It can be hard at first to introduce healthy snacks into your diet, so here are some of my personal favorite guilt-free snack ideas:

1. Pepperoni and Cheese

If you’re anything like me, your eyes probably light up when you go to a party and see a pepperoni platter. It’s easily one of the best snacks out there. If you add crackers into the mix you are adding more carbs to your diet; but just having a few slices of pepperoni and cheese together can be a perfect mid-day snack!

2. Hummus and Pretzels

I’ve noticed that hummus seems to be an acquired taste. The first time I tried it, I didn’t think I would ever have it again. After a while I attempted to reintroduce it into my snack purchases, and now I am totally in love. My favorite kinds are  red pepper and other  spicy flavors dipped with either pretzels or various veggies such as celery and sliced peppers. It’s so good, it can be hard to eat in moderation!

3. Fruit Clusters

The brand Ocean Spray has a variety of different fruit cluster snacks. They’re little “cluster” balls of dried cranberry, whole grain oats, almonds, and other amazing combinations. They’re perfect to have a small bag in your purse to pop a few in your mouth throughout the day. These little clusters are also really great in yogurt!

4. Almonds

Almonds are great when you’re in need of a protein fix. Another great benefit of almonds, besides that they’re delicious, is that they are a great source of Vitamin E and other antioxidants that help to keep your skin nourished. Almonds are one of the sources of the healthy fats that aid in weight loss because you feel full and satisfied, which keeps you from overeating/snacking. They’re an overall great choice to have on hand.

5. Bacon

Despite what you may believe, bacon is actually a great snack choice (in moderation!). It’s low in carbs, has a significant amount of protein, and stops food cravings. If you’re biggest worry when snacking is the amount of carbohydrate intake, this is a great choice because if you cut out the carbs, you’ll need the fat from the bacon for fuel. So take atrip to the market and pick up a package of your favorite bacon, cook it up crispy and keep it in the fridge for when you need a quick snack.

Healthy snacking can be a great addition to your busy days; and when you have great tasting snacks that aren’t bad for you, you wont feel guilty. Always remember, everything is good in moderation.
