10 Songs That Remind You Of Oneonta

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oneonta chapter.

All of us have special songs that remind us of a memory, good or bad. Whenever that specific song plays, it’s almost like a time machine and you find yourself back in that car riding around with your friends or at that concert listening to a great band. That song might even bring you back to one of your memories back at Oneonta. Whether it’s back in your dorm room or out in the city of Oneonta, one of these songs may remind you of your home away from home. Here are 10 songs that will always put you in an Oneonta mood:

10. Shut Up and Dance by Walk The Moon

This song just came out last year and increased the band’s popularity tremendously. There were times on the OPT bus where I heard people singing this song to themselves while listening to their headphones. Even though the words don’t necessarily relate to our beautiful school, the song still makes the list for being catchy and popular among it’s students.

9. Mr. Brightside by The Killers

This song made its debut in 2004. This song, along with this album, skyrocketed the band to popularity. I’ve found that although the lyrics don’t really pertain to Oneonta, this song is almost a must-listen to its students. No one can resist singing along to this unmistakeable tune. And everyone seems to be born knowing the lyrics. Happy listening!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGdGFtwCNBE

8. December, 1963 (Oh, What A Night) by The Four Seasons

This song is the oldest on this list. Despite having made it’s debut in 1975, I still find that it brings on an Oneonta mood. The main lyric of the song that reoccurs is “Oh, what a night”. The song also sings about meeting a girl and enjoying the night on the town. It’s charming sound and fun, relatable lyrics put it on the list. I’m sure that going to Oneonta, we’ve all at some point had the thought “Oh, what a night”. Enjoy!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrp9RLVAUgs

7. Shake It Off by Taylor Swift

This song also came out last year on Taylor Swift’s newest album 1989 . Her new upbeat sound is found to be very popular on our campus which makes it number seven of this list. I have yet to find someone at Oneonta who doesn’t know the lyrics and who doesn’t like dancing along. The lyrics say, “But I keep cruising // Can’t stop, won’t stop moving // It’s like I got this music // In my mind, saying it’s gonna be alright”. College can be stressful with classes, friends, work, etc. You may even find yourself involved in a dramatic situation, unsure of what to do next. Remember to keep cruising and everything will turn out alright. Here it is!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JCLY0Rlx6Q

6. I Would Walk 500 Miles by The Proclaimers

This song, when it came out in 1988, was very popular and is still popular in Oneonta today. Numerous covers of the song have been put together by other musical artists as well. Many of you may have heard this song from the hit television show How I Met Your Mother.  Not only is it upbeat and memorable but there is a sort of tradition tagged along to this song. I’ve found at Oneonta, a lot of students like to replace some of the lyrics of the song with “Oneonta”. It’s a fun song to put you in a good mood and remind you of your home away from home. In the video attached for this song, at 1:34, you will hear the section where the lyrics are replaced. 5. Float On, by Modest Mouse

This song came out in 2004. The chorus in the song says “And we’ll all float on OK// And we’ll all float on alright // Already we’ll all float on // Now don’t you worry we’ll all float on alright // Already we’ll all float on alright // Don’t worry we’ll all float on”. Whether you have a lot of school work, work stress, friend drama, etc., take a breathe and don’t worry. We will all float on and get past any temporary anxiety. 4. Daylight, by Matt and Kim

Released in 2009, this song has made it’s way to popularity at Oneonta. The song gives a very bright and cheerful mood every time you listen to it. There is a particular lyric that I also think relates to being in Oneonta. “And in the daylight I don’t pick up my phone // ‘Cause in the daylight anywhere feels like home”. During the day, you don’t feel the need to be trapped in your phone or online in Oneonta. There is so much to do on and off campus, and Oneonta can definitely be your home away from home. 3. I Don’t Wanna Be, by Gavin DeGraw

This song came out in 2003. Many of you may have heard this song as the theme song for the hit television show One Tree Hill. The lyrics remind you to just be yourself in whatever situation and that’s very important in college. In the lyrics it says, “All I have to do // Is think of me and I have peace of mind // I’m tired of looking ’round rooms // Wondering what I’ve got to do // Or who I’m supposed to be // I don’t want to be anything other than me”. There are a lot of different factors in college and in growing up that may have you doubting your identity. Always remember that you don’t have to be anything other than you. Here’s a link to the song!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gFCW3PHBws

2. Ants Marching, by Dave Matthews Band

Even though this song came out in 1993, before a lot of us were born, I find that it still reminds me a lot of Oneonta. This song makes the list because of it’s relevant lyrics. “All these cars upon the sidewalk // People in every direction // No words exchanged // No time to exchange // When all the little ants are marching”. It especially reminds me of our campus’s quad between classes. Everyone hurrying to get to class or headed wherever they’re off to on campus. But everyone is in their own little world and a lot of people look to be in a rush. The song in general is about taking chances and not getting too stuck in your own little world. Next time you’re in the quad, maybe take a chance and talk to someone. They may not be in as big of a rush as you think. Let’s also not forget the great Dave Matthews cover band that played was one of the opening bands at OH Fest last semester. They did a great cover of this song as well. 1. Nine in the Afternoon, by Panic! At the Disco

In 2008, this song made a really big splash in the music world. Almost all of the lyrics to this song can be relatable to being at the college that we love. In particular, when the song says “Back to the place // Where we used to say // Man it feels good to feel this way // Now I know what I mean”. It feels good to be starting our futures, finding new passions and do it alongside our newly made life long friends. And that is what this song is about. Feeling good in a place that you love and making every moment a happy one. Let’s also remember that Panic! At the Disco was the headlining band for OH Fest just this past spring. We’re feeling so good, just the way that we do when we’re in Oneonta. Enjoy!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCto3PCn8wom
