How Steven Universe Is Helping The LGBTQ+ Community

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Old Westbury chapter.

Growing up in the early 2000’s I was glued to my tv, and would watch Cartoon Network every day. There were always different characters that were supposed to be somewhat relatable and quirky, and meant to connect with the young viewers. There were many couples on these cartoon shows, but I had never seen a gay or lesbian cartoon character. Being gay, lesbian, bi, or trans was an even bigger taboo than it is now when I was young, and there was very little representation especially when it came to youth programs.

Despite this taboo I had gay friends growing up, and everyone seemed to know someone who was gay whether it was a patient or a neighbor. But still, homosexual relationships weren’t shown on tv. Well cartoon network has changed that fact with their show Steven Universe, which features openly gay characters and is a refreshing change to the hetero-normative characters in today’s media. To see a lesbian couple in a children’s show be open and affectionate is one thing, but Steven Universe is all about making their characters well rounded. It shows that being gay is a normal thing, and that even heroes can be gay without their sexuality being a big deal. With multiple of the main characters being lesbians, the show is progressive and important in showing today’s youth that they are accepted! May Cartoon Network pave the way for other channels to follow suit.
