Everyone With a Vagina Should Be a Feminist

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Old Westbury chapter.

Let’s get this cleared up: a feminist is not anti-men, does not hate sex, and DOES shower. The definition of feminism is “the advocacy of women’s rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes.” Yes, it’s all about girl power and smashing the patriarchy and there should be absolutely nothing wrong with women wanting equal pay, especially if they are working as much or more. You can’t put all feminists in one box. Not everybody is the same. There will be people who hate sex, chocolate or happiness but it’s not because they are feminist! Sure, there are people who hide behind feminism but you can’t assume all feminist are the same. So many girls refuse to be called feminists because they are afraid of the judgment that will come with it. They’re scared that society will try to dim their light. Well, it’s too late for that! The famous Maya Angelou quote says, “I’m a feminist. I’ve been a female for a long time. I’d be stupid not to be a feminist.” You need to fight for the definition of feminism because you deserve it. No one should feel comfortable saying that they can “grab you by the pussy” or be against you because you’re fighting for what is right.

You cannot have a vagina and not be on your own side. Don’t you think you deserve to get equal pay and for society to stop objectifying you on a daily basis?

What I hear so often with non-feminists is “I get that you want equality and all, but feminists claim to be about girl power, when what you really do is ambush people.” Here’s the theory I’ll use here, since we’re talking about gender: if you meet a group of football players and some of them (probably most) fart, burp, and pick their noses in public. Will you say that all football players are disgusting? Of course not! You may have even dated one! Now I’ll use a different theory… If you meet a caucasian murderer, will you assume that all caucasians are killers? I’m pretty sure your answer will be a no.

Stop making excuses and get up, chin up, and live the life you deserve. Don’t let men determine your future, do it yourself.
