This fabulous little store just passed it’s one year anniversary on January 30 and the owner, Melissa Markham, couldn’t be more happy about it. “Our passion is helping women find the right bra size that makes them feel good, fits right, and lasts as long as it should” she said. Free bra fittings are offered to everyone who comes in, their attempt at changing the statistic that 8 out of 10 women are wearing the wrong bra size. “In my experince it’s actually 10 out of 10 women wearing the wrong bra size. I tell people it’s not a small to extra-large kind of thing, it’s a science and there’s a lot that goes into it.”
And Melissa’s reason for opening Whisper Intimate Apparel isn’t just about making money. “The reason I opened the store is my because my family spans every bra size there is: my younger sister is a 34B, older sister is a 42HH, we span everything and they both have always had trouble finding bras that fit right. So I kind of started digging around to see if there was a market for it here.” Lucky for her, before Whisper Intimate Apparel was founded, Stillwater had been desperate for a lingerie store. No more waiting by the mailbox for a package from Victoria’s Secret!
For a quick test ofthe bra you’re wearing right now, she said you can tell if it’s the wrong size by:
- if you can feel the underwire poking you anywhere
- if your band (the part directly below the bust that has the clasps on it) isn’t parallel to the ground, or it rides up during the day, or you’re constantly pulling on it
- “Quad boob” (We’ve all seen it, the girl that thinks her boobs spilling out of the top of her too-small-bra is sexy… It’s not)
- If your shoulder straps dig in and cause discomfort
