Pop Wise: New Book Blockbusters

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Ohio U chapter.

First it was Harry Potter. Then it was Twilight. Now it’s The Hunger Games. Though these book series couldn’t be more different in plot, they do share one thing in common–they’ve all been made into box office-crushing movies. The book-turned-movie phenomenon has taken Hollywood by storm in recent years to the excitement of book nerds alike. Now, the question on everyone’s mind is what the new big book blockbuster will be. Get caught up on these three upcoming books set to be movies:

The Mortal Instruments
Expected Date: August 2013
Notable Stars: Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, Lena Headey, Jonathan Rhys Meyers

With mystical elements and action-packed adventures, City of Bones–the first book in The Mortal Instruments series–is sure to make a thrilling movie. When Clary (Collins) discovers she descends from an ancient line of supernatural warriors called Shadowhunters, her life is turned upside down. Cue a new world filled with vampires, werewolves, warlocks, fairies and even blood-curdling demons. She teams up with a group of teenage Shadowhunters, including the very sexy but tormented Jace (Bower), to find her kidnapped mom (Headey). But the secrets she uncovers along the way may be more than she can handle. Check out pictures from the set.

Beautiful Creatures
Expected Date: February 2013
Notable Stars: Alden Ehrenreich, Alice Englert, Emmy Rossum, Viola Davis

Beautiful Creatures–book one of the series–will be a treat for fans of magic, underdogs and star-crossed love. Ethan (Ehrenreich) longs to break out of his mundane life in a small Southern town. When new girl Lena (Englert) arrives, he finds exactly the mystery he’s been looking for. Lena comes from a family of spell-casters who hold great powers. She’s completely outside the conventions of the town, and Ethan couldn’t be drawn to her more. Their budding relationship, however, will lead to a path of history and discovery, causing both to question whom they truly are. Even better, this movie has a trailer.

Divergent
Expected Date: March 2014
Rumored Stars: Shailene Woodley and Evan Peters

Dystopian worlds are a hot commodity these days, but Divergent–the first in the book series–will bring a new twist to the genre when it’s adapted for film. Set in future Chicago, society is separated into five factions, each with its own virtue. At 16, every teenager must choose one for life, a choice that leaves Beatrice torn between her family and her desires. Her decision will transform her life, leading to new friendships and an attraction with a sometimes irritating as well as intriguing boy called Four. Throughout it all, she must also deal with a secret that for her could mean death.
