I am a reformed make-up user. Prior to my beauty epiphany, a normal morning routine consisted of brushing my teeth, wearing the make-up from the night before and a spray or several of whatever perfume I had.
I knew nothing about make-up products and their specific functions. Blush, bronzers, highlighters, and serums were completely foreign to me until I interned at Marie Claire in the beauty department.

Clueless, I told my superiors that while I was a novice to the make-up world I was interested in learning the industry and maybe even gaining a little clarity in the process. Thrown into a closet, I was forced to assimilate myself with foundations, rouges and more.

As time progressed, I became a bit more adventurous in trying new looks, hairstyles and colors. Above all, I realized experimentation in any sector of beauty is key.

In my short time at Marie Claire, I racked up a few items that can enhance your look, while still keeping it simple.

Usually, I am an advocate for inexpensive, drug store products. Some may turn their nose up at the sight of the logo; however, NYC New York and Wet n’Wild are some of my favorite brands.

Yet, there is one product that I will always splurge on and that is Christian Dior’s DiorSkin AirFlash Spray Foundation. While the price is a steep $60, it is a mist foundation that gives the wearer an air-brushed feel. The foundation blends perfectly into the skin, leaving your face feeling light and illuminated. Being a cheap person (yes, I’ll admit to it), the price and designer are a little overwhelming right off the bat. However, I have been and will be a loyal user. Hands down, best foundation ever.

Another product that is my go-to in the morning is NYC New York’s Color Liquid Eyeliner in Jet Black. I never used to be a fan of liquid eyeliner until I repeatedly kept poking myself in the eye with my eye pencil. Sweeping it on your eyelid takes mere seconds, giving you the iconic Bridget Bardot look. Long wearing and smudge proof, this liquid eyeliner allows your eyes to be the focal point (from day to night) without the hassle.

Statement lips have been increasing popular on the runways of several designers. While translating the runway to reality may seem a bit difficult to pull off, finding a lip shade that is similar allows you to play around with your hair and other features of your ensemble. A lipstick that I think is subtle enough to wear in class and out during the evening is Borghese’s Advanced Care LipColour in Bistro. For only $24, the lipstick is long-lasting, and conditioning and hydrating for your pout in the meantime.  If a bold lip color isn’t your style, I always go to C.O. Bigelow’s Mentha Lip Tint—Bare Mint for $7.50 for a sheer, glossy appearance.

Finishing off your look, I opt for a cheek tint. I find Covergirl’s Instant Cheekbones Contouring Blush in Refined Rose a perfect way to give you some color while still appearing subtle. In the set, there are three complimentary shades, allowing you to blend all the colors on your cheekbones. Available at any drugstore, this blush is easily accessible and inexpensive, too.

From high end designers like Christian Dior to national favorite’s like Covergirl, each brand offers unique products aiming to improve your overall appearance. Above are a few products I have found during the past several months that help benefit my body and attitude. I encourage everyone to take the time to test the waters and try products one normally would shy away from. Have fun with the process and find something that fits your lifestyle!

Rebekah Meiser is a senior studying Magazine Journalism at Ohio University, with a split specialization in Italian and Art History. Like many Italians, she is obnoxiously proud of her heritage and fully embraces it by consuming embarrassing amounts of pasta, bread and cheese. She currently owes a scary amount of money to the government, but continues to masochistically check Net-a-Porter and Urban Outfitters online for beautiful items that she lusts but cannot afford. Rebekah goes to school in the middle of some of the best cornfields in Ohio. Although she finds the location less than ideal, she has become an avid star-gazer thanks to the unpolluted sky. A true lover of fashion, her friends make fun of her for playing dress up as often as she does, but she’s not one to be discouraged. Rebekah also loves to run (read: alternate between jogging and walking), read fashion blogs, bake, and read magazines (of which she owns a forest-worth). She hopes to live and work in New York City after she graduates in the spring.
